Long Time GCDC Board Member -
Richard Thoman
Richard Thoman is a Green County Board Supervisor, City of Monroe Alderman, and owner of Americinn Hotel in Monroe.
Our AmericInn Hotel was built in 1995. My wife Jane and I purchased the property in 2005. Since then we have refreshed the hotel several times. We just finished replacing the furniture, flooring, and the lobby for the 3rd time. Also, we have made many energy improvements over the years. We installed Solar Water panels about 15 years ago, and we have also added PV Solar panels about 6 years ago with an additional array of solar panels this past year increasing electric generation. All our lighting has been replaced with more efficient LED lights and we have been replacing equipment with more energy efficient equipment. We installed an electric vehicle charging station several years ago to serve guests or others that need to charge their vehicles.
Since purchasing the property in 2005, we have nearly doubled in business. We are now a Wyndham Property and employ typically more than 15 people part or full time.
How are you active in the community? My wife and I are active in our community. We are active in our church as well as in the government. I serve as a County Board Supervisor and a City of Monroe Alderman.
What do you like about Green County? We like the people and Swiss heritage of the county. We have many friends and relatives that we have made over the years and it is great going to the stores or events in the county and generally we see friends and family. Green County is generally a safe place that is great for raising children with good schools. Green County is a small enough community to connect with others while at the same time is in close proximity to larger cities if we want to enjoy some of the things only large cities can provide. Green County also has a Clinic and hospital that makes healthcare easier to obtain than many other communities.
What opportunities do you see in Green County? An opportunity that exists in my opinion is housing. If someone wants to get into the residential rental business, the opportunity is there. This is also a weakness as there is not enough housing stock. Another weakness which is probably a direct result of the housing shortage is the labor pool which is slim.
What is your vision for Green County? i would like to see housing stock increased and the labor pool increased. With the aging population, we need to attract younger families and talent as we grow responsibly.
