Shop the Fall Citywide Garage Sale

on Saturday, October 12th | 9am-3pm!

Find Household Treasures at Over 30 Garage Sales on Saturday, October 12th from 9am-3pm! - The City of El Cerrito coordinates the Citywide Garage Sale in the Spring and in the Fall. This event promotes reuse, so that one person's trash becomes another person's treasure!

Find garage sale listings and locations using the Digital Map on the City's website at El-cerrito.org/GarageSale. Printed maps will also be available at the front counters of the El Cerrito Recycling + Environmental Resource Center (7501 Schmidt Ln), El Cerrito Community Center (7007 Moeser Ln) and City Hall (10890 San Pablo Ave) beginning Friday, October 4th.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is rain or shine. In inclement weather including poor air quality due to wildfire smoke, it will be the host's purview to cancel or proceed.

DID YOU KNOW? In 1990, El Cerrito resident, Marianne Hegeman, proposed the concept of a Citywide Garage Sale to the El Cerrito City Council. An avid proponent of reuse and recycling, Hegeman got the idea shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989, when many residents in El Cerrito could not have their home foundations inspected because their garages were packed full of stuff. The City Council endorsed the idea and the City has held one or two garage sales per year ever since.

Each year the City’s Recycling + Environmental Resource Center designates a date for residents who want to participate and hold their own garage sales. The City then advertises and promotes the event, attracting shoppers across the East Bay. The event not only promotes reuse, it also gives residents a chance to get rid of clutter; it is a fun community event and a chance to get to know neighbors.

Measure G is on Your Local November Ballot!

After months of feedback from hundreds of El Cerrito residents, the City has placed Measure G on the November 5 ballot for voter consideration.

If approved by a majority of El Cerrito voters, Measure G would reauthorize El Cerrito’s existing 1-cent sales tax until ended by voters, extending a source of locally-controlled funding that cannot be taken by the State, without raising existing tax rates.

Measure G was placed on the ballot after months of outreach to and feedback from local residents, who consistently prioritized the basic local services that existing voter-approved funding supports.

As noted in our 2024 budget adoption, the expiration of current local funding would require the City to make budget changes equivalent to a 10% across the board cut of all City services, programs and staff.

Measure G continues existing local funding accountability requirements including continuation of independent citizen’s oversight, mandatory financial audits and yearly reports to the community to ensure that all funds are spent as promised.

Please look for local Measure G on your November ballot! For more information about Measure G please visit El-cerrito.org/MeasureG.

Get To Know Your

Street Sweeping Schedule

As the Fall rainy season approaches, the City of El Cerrito asks that residents move their vehicles from the street on their scheduled street sweeping day. Street sweepers remove pollutants before they enter storm drains, ditches and creeks which eventually flow into the Bay.

Find your street’s sweeping schedule at El-cerrito.org/StreetSweeping.

Get Ready for the Rainy Season!

Creeks and culverts can overflow during heavy rains and the City needs assistance in assuring that the storm drain system functions properly. Here’s how you can help:

  • If you have a creek on your property, make sure that debris and vegetation do not block the flow of water.
  • Make sure to prevent soil, trash & other materials from entering the storm gutter area & never pour anything other than storm water in the drain inlet.
  • If you have a storm drain grate in the street near your home or business, check it during heavy rains. Make sure nothing blocks the grate. If you observe an inlet that needs cleaning, contact the City at (510) 215-4369.
  • If your property is flooded by water from the street, report the problem to the City at (510) 215-4369.
  • To prevent flooding from the street, the City provides up to ten (10) sandbags for each household in El Cerrito & Kensington.

The sand pile and bags are available at the El Cerrito Recycling Center (7501 Schmidt Lane). Please bring proof of residency and check in with Recycling Staff. If you have questions about storm drain system maintenance or need additional assistance, please contact Public Works at (510) 215-4369 or email maintenance@ci.el-cerrito.ca.us.

Join the Friends of the Hillside Natural Area to pull French Broom - a noxious and fast growing weed that has taken over large swathes of habitat in our city’s natural areas. Help the recently formed Friends group combat this plant, allowing native plants to flourish in its stead!

Leader Audrey Liese writes: “The times may shift depending on volunteer availability, so if you're interested but can’t make these slots, feel free to let me know! Depending on the weather, we’ll either work in shaded areas or out in the open.”

“Our main focus will be removing French broom, though we may also tackle other invasive weeds. Specifically, we’ll be targeting the stems left after recent mowing, ensuring they don’t grow back more densely.

The Bay Area Air District is Offering $1,500 to Scrap Cars '98 Or Older

As of July 1,2024 the Air District will offer $1,500 to Bay Area residents to improve local air quality by scrapping their 1998 and older vehicles through the Vehicle Buy Back Program.

Eligibility requirements for the Vehicle Buy Back Program include the following:

  • Vehicle must be 1998 model year or older
  • Vehicle must be currently registered as operable and must be drivable
  • Vehicle must have been registered in the Bay Area for the past 24 months
  • Vehicles within 60 days of a required smog check must take and pass smog check

These pollutants contribute to respiratory diseases and increased mortality rates. Retiring older vehicles also reduces carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

The State of California operates a complimentary program offering eligible consumers vehicle retirement options for vehicles that do not pass smog check. View more information on the state's Consumer Assistance Program.
