11:00am- Arrival and Brunch

12:00pm - Session 1

GREEN LEADERSHIP: Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center—A case study

Designed as a “chalet for all”, the net-zero Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center design by nARCHITECTS, functions as a gateway to the stunning natural environment of Jones Beach West End 2, while also educating visitors on how they can become stewards of the environment. Meeting New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act’s objectives almost 30 years before its targets, the building serves as a model for sustainable architecture.

Speaker: Eric Bunge, FAIA - nARCHITECTS

MATERIALS EXPERTS: SHERWIN WILLIAMS / Coatings, third party certification and the healthy building movement

Fueled by the demand for spaces that contribute to occupant well being, owners are looking to design and construct healthier buildings. Advanced coatings help address common concerns and transparency is critical to selecting products. Participants will learn how to identify products which have undergone third-party certification and testing for VOC content, emissions and the impact of building materials. Participants will also learn about advancements in coating technologies that allow for VOC compliance as well as performance benefits for the owner.

GREEN LEADERSHIP: CLIMATE ACTION DESIGN CHARETTE

Work in groups to consider the ways in which the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act) of 2019 can guide architectural interventions. Participants will review portions of the Climate Act and design a house or building that meets at least one of these goals to present to the group. Speaker: Dr. Jeanne Haffner, Director and Chief Curator - Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center

TOUR: NET ZERO

The Net-Zero Tour uses the award-winning Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center to explore how architectural design can work with its exterior environment. Participants will be given a behind-the-scenes look at their solar array, battery, geothermal system, and energy saving features. The construction of the site is also included, as an example of landscape restoration, shoreline engineering, and coastal processes.

1:00pm - Session 2

PRACTICE: ORLI+ from AIA Queens / 10 years after Sandy

On the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, this presentation will discuss current and future resilience efforts for front-line coastal communities and the evolving risks they continue to face from climate change, and how architects and designers can help. Speaker: Dan Horn, AIA

MATERIALS EXPERTS: ACUITY / Sustainable Lighting

Participants will learn about elements of sustainability and how to best specify sustainably designed luminaires; understand the various methods of assessing sustainability including life cycle assessments and materials transparency; gain a working knowledge of luminaire related sustainability requirements of WELL, LEED, and the Living Building Challenge; learn to apply the principles discussed to specify the most environmentally responsible lighting equipment for your project.

MATERIALS EXPERTS: HANSGROHE / It’s a Thirsty World

The world’s endless thirst for water has put great strains on the earth’s fresh water sources, restricting the natural water cycle from replenishing them. Thirsty World will explore how Agriculture, Industry, Human demands, and this country’s aging infrastructure have created these strains. Participants will discuss new government regulations which preserve water, observe design and product solutions to save both water and energy, and discover the technology that is driving performance in water saving products.

2:00pm - Session 3

GREEN LEADERSHIP: Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center—A case study

Speaker: Eric Bunge, FAIA, nARCHITECTS

Practice: Dameron Architecture from AIA Brooklyn / A Wall made of Bricks and responsible reuse of existing site materials

Dameron Architecture will explore how to critically examine the nature of an urban site through the responsible reuse of existing site materials to create architecture that engages the community as an artistic expression and a form of "time travel." This presentation will touch on some of the difficulties of "reuse" and circularity in the current construction climate from a monetary perspective and speak to how we overcame those obstacles on this particular project. Dameron Architecture’s “Wall made of Bricks” won both AIANY and National AIA awards this year. Speaker: Christopher Dameron, AIA

MATERIALS EXPERTS: GREEN LOGIC / Solar Power and Renewable Energy Solutions in Buildings (2 HOURS)

In this session, participants will be updated on the current energy situation and directions for achieving greater levels of sustainability. The focus will shift to renewable energy resources— all-electric net zero and near zero energy projects with solar power and geothermal HVAC are presented in illustrative case studies with real-world results. The intent is to answer any and all questions from architects and designers about making their projects as sustainable and inexpensive to operate as possible using the technologies and concepts presented in the program.

3:00pm - Session 4

MATERIALS EXPERTS: FEATHER FRIENDLY / Bird-Friendly Glass: Changing the Flight of Bird Conservation in Architectural Design

Feather Friendly will share vital information about the severity of bird collisions with our city structures and glass. Participants will discuss the gravity of the problem, the leading issues that glass presents, what the science says about effective treatment, and Feather Friendly's proven solutions.
