Local Schools Highlight

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recognizes schools that make a commitment to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources through the Green School Designation Program. The program’s environmental guidelines help Florida primary and secondary schools evaluate operations, set goals and take specific actions to improve environmental performance. Designated Green Schools create a healthier environment for students, employees and communities. Reducing water and energy use and reducing waste help lower operating costs.

Below are the latest schools to gain Green Apple Designation in the Florida Green School Designation Program.

The designation application is a comprehensive evaluation tool that details the program’s requirements and provides links to best management practices and technical assistance to help you achieve Florida Green School designation.

Green Schools Challenge Kick-off

Registration is now open for the 2021-2022 academic year! The Green Schools Challenge program runs from September to April and schools start the year by creating a green team and develop an environmental pledge together. Register Here

World Cleanup Day

EARTHDAY.ORG has partnered with World Clean-up Day to encourage individuals around the world to get outside and clean up their communities from now through the end of September. This is a global effort in conjunction with Let's Do It World, National Clean-Up Day and Keep America Beautiful.

Join Our Parent Advisory Committee

DIG is searching for parents of students in Miami-Dade and Broward County that are interested in working with our staff and Board to inform and advance our Green Schools Challenge program for the 2021-2022 school year. We are looking for ambassadors that will help spread the word about the benefits of a more robust environmental literacy curriculum for pre-K through 12th grade students.

Stories from the Field

United Way Miami is inviting you to recommend 11^th and 12^th grade students to be a part of our 2021-2022 Youth Institute Fellowship. Youth Institute is a yearlong program dedicated to empowering local youth to become successful in their future careers, lifelong community advocates, and agents of change.

During this year, they will expose high school students to:

Resources needed to pursue post-secondary education and/or workforce readiness,
Collaborate in a community service-learning project where they will get to implement a real-world proposal,
Participate in high quality activities and traveling opportunities to further their cross-cultural leadership skills.

If you know of any 11^th or 12^th grader that may be interested or could benefit from this fellowship or internship, please ensure that they meet the requirements of a minimum 2.5 GPA and a completed application by Tuesday, September 7th at midnight.

Alumni Highlights

Guido Dominguez was a participant when he was in middle school, now he is a Senior at Pomona College where he is a Posse Scholar and Jack Kent Cooke Scholar majoring in Physics with a passion for policy. This Summer he completed an internship for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Congratulations for this amazing achievement!
