Join the Call To Ban Junk Food in Boston Public Schools |
Care about public health?
Then join our call on the Boston School Committee to ban all forms of junk food marketing in Boston public schools! We are currently facing an epidemic of diet-related disease, where 1 in 3 US children born in the year 2000 will develop Type 2 diabetes if trends continue. This health epidemic is being driven by the junk food industry that targets kids and gets them hooked on this unhealthy food while they're young. And one of the most worst ways they do this is by marketing in schools. Examples of this aggressive marketing in schools are McTeacher's Nights, where teachers actually work behind the counter at a local McDonald's and serve burgers and fries to their students, junk food coupons handed out in school report cards, and health and nutrition presentations by Ronald McDonald in schools. We can safeguard our children's health by ensuring healthy school food environments that promote proper nutrition. That's why we are calling on the Boston School Committee to pass a policy banning junk food marketing, like McTeacher's Night, in Boston public schools. Boston has been a leader among school boards on removing soda machines and junk foods from schools. We have the opportunity to heighten this leadership and make it clear to both McDonald's and other school boards nationwide that these fast food corporations responsible for the global health epidemic have no place in our schools. Get involved in our Value [the] Meal campaign by contacting Joan Cannon and signing our petition!

The
Get Loud Challenge is a groundbreaking climate action campaign that will motivate more than 500,000 young people (ages 13-24) in all 50 states to take highly visible, online and offline action to thrust climate change out of the shadows and into the spotlight. Young people will earn points for a range of climate actions including having climate conversations with family and friends and calling elected officials to raise the profile of climate change and clean energy policy in their communities. Youth who take the greatest actions will be celebrated as America's most influential climate leaders with experiential and reputational awards, like college scholarships and a trip to the Peruvian Amazon on a climate expedition.

The World Advanced Vehicle Expedition (WAVE) is a people's movement offering practical environmentally sustainable actions following the 2015 Paris agreement on climate change. We are looking for schools in coastal cities, where the pupils should simply write their commitment to reducing polluting carbon dioxide (CO2) gas on a piece of paper of 8 x 12 cm. We are inviting 1,000,000 school children in 100 coastal cities from around the world to submit these papers. We would then gather and unveil these at the UN in Switzerland on June 17 as part of an international climate campaign. Learn More
