Sponsor Spotlight: Wal-Mart
|
As the largest grocer, many of Walmart's initiatives are dedicated to eliminating food waste, which commonly occur from confusion caused by food labels and tossing of imperfect, but perfectly usable fresh produce. To combat these culprits, Walmart has taken action:
- Consumers often mistake date labels as food safety indicators; however, most of the labels are created based on peak quality. Adding to the confusion is the different language used on labels, including "best by", "use by" and "sell by". That's why, in the last year, Walmart started requiring suppliers of nonperishable food products under their Great Value private label to use a standardized date label, "Best if used by". The switch went into effect in July and involves thousands of products.
- Imperfections to the surface of produce can occur when growers face obstacles such as hailstorms and high-winds, leaving their products somewhat damaged. While the texture and flavor remain perfect, the exterior damage usually renders these fruits unsellable in the fresh market because they fail to meet traditional grade standards. Walmart is proud to be the first retailer to debut this "I'm Perfect" brand of apples to over 300 stores as just one example of the ways that the retailer aims to reduce food waste, support growers, and provide value to its customers.
