While spring is arriving in some parts of the country, it’s still cold in the middle. Manitoba has not seen many days near zero, while this may not be great for the people, early indications are it is good for the grass. Winter has treated turf well with sufficient snow cover through the harshest months. 

As we move toward the spring season, conditions have varied across the province, with many areas experiencing prolonged snow cover and, in some regions, significant ice accumulation. Repeated winter storms and high winds have created drifting conditions, while low-lying and shaded areas have seen ice layers persist for extended periods. This in turn has created concerns around potential anoxia and winter injury on putting greens. As we transition from winter to spring and snow melting and chances of flash freezes more concern will lean towards crown hydration.

Upcoming 2026 Award Deadline Date

2026 CGSA TURF MANAGERS’ SHORT COURSE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD:

The CGSA Turf Managers’ Short Course Scholarship Award was instituted by CGSA to support students studying at the University of Guelph in the month-long Turf Managers’ Short Course.

NEW IN 2025: The CGSA Board of Directors has approved one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 in scholarship funds for the 2026 academic year.

• Deadline for Submission: March 31, 2026
• Purpose: Financial support for students enrolled in the University of Guelph Turf Managers' Short Course.
• Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in the course.
