Over the past couple of weeks, golf courses around the province have started resuming activities. Many courses set May 1^st as their opening day for permitting play. Golf courses in most parts came through the winter in relatively good conditions. Temperatures have fluctuated this spring but have allowed superintendents and their crews to get out on the golf courses.

QGSA had their SSGQ in early March. The two days were well attended and had great speakers. The next event on QGSA’s agenda is the Don Gordon Classic suppliers tournament at the Parcours de Cerf Golf Club July 16. 

After a winter that seemed to drag on, most courses around Saskatchewan have been opening this past week. Due to a steadier winter around the province, compared to previous years, courses are seeing a much better start to the season with healthy turf. Minimal frost in the ground is allowing courses to start up irrigation earlier than previously.  Early season temperatures are feeling like summer with above zero overnights and mid 20’s during the days.



As we enter May, University students return to work which provides a nearly complete team. This can be the first job for many or the first job working with potentially dangerous equipment. As such, it is crucial to prioritize proper safety and training as employees start. The skills they gain from this employment can have lifelong impacts.

Rob Ackerman, Superintendent, Weston Golf and Country Club was the OGSA recipient of the William Sansom award. It honours individuals whose outstanding contributions have significantly advanced the golf course superintendent profession.

Hannah Isinghood, was delighted to share that she will be interning @TheHomeofGolf this year. She says, "It's an honour to contribute to maintaining the links and have the opportunity to be immersed in the rich tradition of golf in Scotland."

Congratulations to Jackson Wiebenga, 2nd Assistant Superintendent, Cordova Bay Golf Course who is the first winner of the CGSA Turf Managers’ Short Course Scholarship Award. The CGSA/ENVU Superintendent of the Year Award is one of CGSA’s most prestigious awards. The title is awarded to a superintendent who has been nominated by either a Provincial Golf Superintendent Association or by a CGSA member as a knowledgeable and competent member of the profession who has been distinguished in the practice of golf course management. The winner of this award is chosen by an anonymous committee of peers. 

The successful nominee will attend the Fall Field Day in Quebec at Le Club Laval-sur-le-lac, Laval-sur-le-lac October 6-7, 2025, and they will also be recognized at CGSA's 60^th  The Canadian Golf Course Management Conference  (CGCMC) during the Award Luncheon in February 2026 in Calgary, Alberta.

Kieran Molony, a master's student under Dr. Katerina Jordan, is conducting research on take-all patch disease and its causal pathogens in creeping bentgrass.
