I come to you in this edition from the lunchroom of the maintenance sheds of The Old Course at St Andrews! While this week has felt like a complete dream (and I’m sure the lack of sleep has something to do with that) I can assure you that my opening line is a fact. Last fall I was invited by the Director of Greenkeeping, Sandy Reid, to be a part of his Team this week for the Women’s British Open. Being my first time in Scotland and of course then my first time at St Andrews, there are many things that are new, different, and exciting.

Many superintendents are relieved to see September arrive. The rain events have varied around Atlantic Canada over the summer. Some courses like us at Chester are very dry and have drained down their irrigation ponds. While others have been very wet. The pockets of rain all summer have been very localized, which seems to be the new normal.
Most of us have our Club Championships behind us and most major events as well. That being said, September can be a busy time for corporate events.

Winter Turf Research Project | The University of Minnesota is seeking assistance from golf course superintendents on a WinterTurf research project focused on understanding winter stresses of turfgrass so that we can develop easy-to-implement solutions for turfgrass managers in cold climates. Our objectives include developing best management practices to prevent and recover from winter injury, breeding more winter hardy turfgrass species, and exploring alternative snow mold control strategies.
