Ours is a river of love. She accepts us just as we are. We bring to her our whole, authentic selves. She allows us to ride on her back for a joyous day of wonder and happiness, making no judgements. She allows us to rest in quiet to hear the rushing water, the birds singing about us in our quest to find peace and clear our mind. Let us all rejoice that our river receives us, just as we are.

Our watershed is big and so are our dreams!

We dream of continuing our programs to keep our waters clean and healthy for all. We dream of growing our membership and volunteer numbers. We dream of continuing our water quality project and educational programs. Would you please consider a donation or membership? Any amount helps and we sincerely appreciate your contributions. You can go directly to Membership and Donations and make a donation of your choice or become a member! Our mailing address is PO Box 1419 Lewisburg, WV 24901 Thank you!

Perry Mann Reapppears

By Chris Chanlett

I have selected a volume of essays by Perry Mann whom I consider “WV’s Wendell Berry.” He shares the same agrarian contrariness and some the same gift for graceful prose. If anything Mann is more political and joyfully calls a spade a spade.

Mann loved recalling his youth fishing and frolicking in the Greenbrier. As an elder he held a longtime membership in the watershed, even wrote an article for the newsletter. In this volume he makes several references to his beloved Greenbrier and the New which he overlooked from his legal office in Hinton.

Mann was an implacable environmental advocate. He considered nature the foundation of well-being, art, design, all right minded purposefulness. He despised cities, consumer capitalism, dogmatism, and militarism. He waged intellectual combat with alacrity.  He veered seamlessly between agrarian conservatism and social and political liberalism.

Renaissance Mann: Writing by, to, and from Perry Mann is available at the New Chapter bookstore in Lewisburg and from Amazon. Apologies for the latter but their print on demand is irresistible as well the digital format on Kindle. I would be more than happy to sign any book you buy. Amazon link here

Action Alert: Speak up for stronger water protections in West Virginia

Every three years, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection reviews the state’s water quality standards — the rules that determine whether our rivers, streams, and drinking water sources are protected from pollution.

Right now, DEP is accepting public comments for their 2028 Triennial Review.

The Mountain Valley Pipeline poses a great risk to our forests and surrounding communities. We are also working to improve habitat connectivity for wildlife throughout Virginia and to ensure that all of our waterways are fully protected in accordance with the law.

Stop the Money Pipeline ~ If we can stop the flow of money, we can stop the flow of oil. In early 2020, thirty-two organizations came together to form the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition. We stand on the shoulders of years of movement work pressuring financial institutions to act on climate.
