GREENE SCHOLARS SENIOR SALUTE VIDEO

In this Senior Salute video 12 of our 2023 graduates explore how the Greene Scholars Program has impacted their lives and share their interests and plans for the future. Their testimony emphasizes the Greene Scholars Program's success in building STEM confidence and creating a sense of community.

According to Keely Washington, pictured in the video above, "Greene Scholars helped me see the topics that I’m interested in, like public health, through a STEM-based lens that helps me approach problems differently and maybe have better solutions." She will soon see the world through a new lens as she heads off to study public health at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Changing Lives One Student at a Time

The Greene Scholars Class of 2023 shared in their own words the variety of ways that participation in the program has influenced them.

"The Greene Scholars Program allowed me to be a part of the community with like-minded students of color who were interested and focused on developing their skills in STEM that allowed me to feel a sense of community and help build a sense of belonging," said graduating senior Gabrielle Gitau. Gabrielle is planning to study computer science and environmental studies at Vassar College.

"Greene Scholars made me more confident when it came to doing STEM-based studies in school and when it comes to looking for a STEM-based career," said Jeremiah Kwakye. Jeremiah is planning to major in electrical engineering at UC Davis.

Wudase Yousef said, "Greene Scholars offered me the role models and knowledge that I was lacking in school. Through GSP I saw people that looked like me in positions I never thought they would be in. I saw Black people as scientists, as researchers, as doctors in many fields in STEM, and that just really inspired me to go after my dreams and also pursue a career in STEM." Wudase is planning to major in neuroscience at Santa Clara University.

Jabra Gift to Greene Scholars Seniors

A hearty thanks to the company Jabra for their technology donations to Greene Scholars over the years. Jabra is a leading brand in audio, video, and collaboration solutions – engineered to empower consumers and businesses. In addition to providing high-quality speakerphones and web cameras used during the Greene Scholars STEM workshops, Jabra recently donated a gift of technology to each graduating senior. The gift boxes included a pair of Jabra Elite Active Earbuds, an Evolve 30 Headset and a Panacast 20 Webcam, which members of the class of 2023 can use as they head off to college in the fall. GSP Senior Ezra Tramble, pictured below with his parents, can use his new Jabra technology at UC Berkeley, where he plans to major in electrical engineering and computer science.

Incubating Leadership Skills

In addition to fostering scientific curiosity, GSP provides a variety of leadership opportunities to our students. According to graduating senior Kylie Henry, "The Greene Scholars Program changed my future by introducing me to the Capstone Project and providing leadership skills. Getting to do a STEM project that was completely under my control was a great learning experience and helped me realize what I could do outside of instructions and direct guidance." Kylie is planning to study biology at West Valley College and pursue a career in medicine.
