GOOD NEWS FOR GREENPORT

MITCHELL PARK PATHWAYS REDONE

All new Mitchell Park park pathways and borders were put in recently.

HISTORIC DISTRICT EXPANSION UPDATE

The preparation of the Nomination to the State and National Registers of historic places is going well. Click here for more details. Approximately 240 properties on Second Street, Front Street, Monsell Place and Stirling Avenue as well as Green Hill Cemetery have been identified and photographed. Our consultant is preparing historic architectural statements for each property and documenting the District’s more than two centuries of evolution from 1750 to 1960. To see an example of what a completed Nomination looks like, click here to read about Lily Dale, a small community outside of Buffalo, New York. You will find by even a quick scan of this Nomination an impressive quality and detail of information. Can’t wait to see our finished product very late in the year.

RAILROAD DOCK & SEAPORT MUSEUM UPDATE

The underground and building utility work is nearly complete. Surface repairs and creation of a garden patio area behind the museum will start next week.

NEW SUNFLOWER MURAL AT FIFTH STREET BEACH

The Village of Greenport Mural Committee partnered with the North Fork Art Collective and local artist Kara Hoblin to create a collaborative mural at 5th Street Beach. This donated public art project beautifies one of Greenport’s most beloved and frequently used community spaces while paying homage to the past through the recreation of the iconic sunflower mural that once welcomed generations of residents and visitors to the beach decades ago.

A collaborative community effort, the mural include participation from students at Greenport High School and Greenport Elementary School alongside volunteer artists from the North Fork Art Collective and donated supplies from Riverhead Building Supply and meals from 1943 Pizza and Lucharitos. The project reflects a broader mission to reconnect art with public space while creating opportunities for community engagement, local pride, and creative expression.

THIRD STREET BASKETBALL COURT IMPROVEMENTS

A few generous villagers have spearheaded a project to raise funds and donate materials and labor to improve the Third Street Basketball Court Park. Proposed improvements include all new basketball hoops, fencing, trees, grass seeding, kiddie soccer net, cornhole, bocce, benches, hop scotch, vinyl mural, and the reinstallment of the original mural to be completed in phases over the summer. Details will be discussed at the Thursday, June 18th Village Board work session starting at 6pm.

UPCOMING SIDEWALK REPAIRS

There will be work on various sidewalks throughout the downtown district. This new technique slices the concrete and creates little disturbance and minimal closure time. The process is used to eliminate uneven concrete and tripping hazards by bringing sidewalks into ADA compliance without having to replace infrastructure.

Repairs are completed quickly, typically taking 10–15 minutes per sidewalk section. Once a repair is finished, the area is immediately accessible to pedestrians with no curing or waiting period required. The company uses a dust abatement system, eliminating 90-95% of silica dust during the work. Their equipment is compact and pushcart-style, and work areas will be temporarily coned off while repairs are underway. Technicians are attentive to maintaining pedestrian access and minimizing disruptions to nearby businesses.

Project Schedule:

· Work is scheduled to begin the morning of Tuesday, June 23.

· Crews will be on-site Tuesday through Friday and are expected to complete most of the project during that time.

· A return visit is anticipated for the following week to complete any remaining work.

Project Locations include Main Street, Front Street, Third Street and more. For more information and locations, check our website later this week.

The exact work sequence is still being determined. If multiple crews are assigned, work may begin at several locations simultaneously. Typically, crews start in outlying areas and work toward the center. Along Main Street and Front Street, repairs near businesses will generally be scheduled during early morning hours to minimize impacts on customer and business access.

SAVE THE DATE: MITCHELL PARK ICE RINK CELEBRATION

The community-wide fundraising campaign to support construction of a permanent seasonal ice rink in Mitchell Park will culminate in a music festival and boat parade on Saturday, August 8th from 6-10pm, coinciding with the visit from the Coast Guard ship, the Barque Eagle, in Mitchell Park and Marina. More details to come soon.  DONATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED HERE. Checks made out to Friends of Mitchell Park with a note in the Memo Field for the Ice Rink Building Fund can be mailed to: The Friends of Mitchell Park, PO Box 512, Greenport, NY 11944.

VILLAGE NOTICES

NEW BRUSH PICKUP GUIDELINES

  • Brush pickup is every two weeks on Tuesdays ending December 1. Please use bio-degradeable bags for leaves and grass.
  • Starting September 1, ALL grass and leaves will be required to be in compostable brown bags. This helps protect our storm drains from getting clogged with debris, keeping us safer as our water table rises, and saving the Village the added expense of more frequent vacuum truck rentals to clean the drains.
  • Please note that we can no longer pick up any brush piles that contain invasive plants like bamboo, phragmites, knotweed, miscanthus, and fountain grass. These aggressive invasive plants are strictly banned from Town compost and yard waste facilities because they can damage finished mulch and easily regenerate if not disposed of properly. Invasive plant species must be placed in regular household garbage.

VILLAGE HALL CLOSED IN OBSERVANCE OF JUNETEENTH

  • Friday, June 19

SUFFOLK COUNTY DSS CHILDCARE VOUCHER UPDATE

  • Unfortunately, our Village After-School Program and Summer Day Camp cannot currently take Suffolk County Department of Social Services childcare vouchers. We are going to continue to look into this option and will inform the community if and when that changes.

EXPANDED PAID PARKING

  • Paid parking will be in effect from Memorial Day weekend through October 12.  In addition to Front and Main Streets, paid parking will also be in effect at the two Adams Street lots farthest west, and the lots on Adams Street between Main and First Streets. Paid parking is in effect daily from 9am-9pm. Handicapped spots are exempt from paid parking.
  • Revenue collected by the Village helps support general Village operations and services. In addition, 10% of the Village’s parking revenue share is specifically dedicated to road and sidewalk repairs and improvements.
  • The paid parking program was implemented to improve parking turnover, help manage seasonal parking demand, support Village services and infrastructure, and reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers
  • Parking regulations are enforced by police and traffic control officers, and the Village is hiring enforcement officers.
  • The ParkMobile app is available for both Apple and Android devices through their respective app stores. Click here for more FAQs and a map.

REMINDER FOR AFTER HOURS UTILITY EMERGENCIES

  • Please call (631) 477-0172 for any utilities emergencies after hours, such as a water or wastewater main leak or electrical outage. For life threatening emergencies, call 911.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING

  • Please do not hesitate to call Southold Town Police Department dispatch for any issues you see, including speeding or blocked intersections. The Village continues to work with the Town to increase coverage by our hardworking officers, including traffic control and harbormasters, especially during our peak summer period. Our police department appreciates hearing directly about problems on their dispatch number at (631) 765-2600. Please call 911 for emergencies.
