Greensboro College Appoints Rebecca Blomgren to Lead Teaching Center

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The president and Academic Council of Greensboro College have appointed Rebecca Blomgren, currently assistant vice president for academic affairs, the next director of the college's Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning.

Her term begins this fall and lasts for three years.

"We are overjoyed that Becky has accepted this appointment," said Paul L. Leslie, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. "We are very confident that she will continue the effective work of Dr. Ann Walter-Fromson, the former director of CETL, to develop the teaching skills of our faculty for the sake of enhancing student learning outcomes."

The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning aims to assist faculty in developing and reflecting on their role as teachers. The specific purposes of the Center are to:

  • increase dialogue among faculty about teaching;
  • provide faculty with opportunities to learn about and implement new approaches to teaching that will enhance student learning;
  • encourage faculty to try new approaches to teaching; and
  • support research on the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Blomgren, a professor of education, has served as a member of the Greensboro College faculty since 1979. Before being named assistant vice president for academic affairs this past November, she had been dean of graduate and professional studies since 2006. She chaired the Department of Education from 2004 to 2006. Before joining Greensboro College, she taught in the Greensboro (now Guilford County) public-school system.

She has served on numerous college committees and currently serves on the Academic Affairs Committee, Graduate Council, President's Council and the Scholastic Standing Committee.

Her teaching awards include the Exemplary Teaching Award of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church and the Moore Distinguished Professor Award.

She holds a B.A. in psychology from Indiana University (Bloomington), an M.Ed. in Elementary and Special Education from Indiana University (Indianapolis) and an Ed.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Greensboro College, an independent, coeducational college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is an academic and social community that unites the liberal arts and Judeo-Christian values in an atmosphere of diversity and mutual respect.

Founded in 1838 and located near downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,250 students from 32 states, the District of Columbia and 24 nations in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master's degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
