GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro College Theatre presents William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 17-19, and 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20, in Gail Brower Huggins Performance Center in Odell Building on campus.

A combination comedy and romance with some intense psychological themes, "The Winter's Tale" tells the story of Leontes, king of Sicily, who grows suspicious that his pregnant wife, Hermione, has had an affair with his visiting boyhood friend, Polixines, king of Bohemia.

 

The title "The Winter's Tale" was a signal to audiences of the early 17^th century that the play was as a tale told around a winter fire - not to be taken seriously, and with a happy ending in store. But many twists and turns come first, including theatre's most famous stage direction: "Exit, pursued by a bear."

 

Greensboro College's Department of Theatre seeks to provide a strong foundation in theatre while allowing the student to emphasize in a particular area such as directing, acting, or arts administration.

 

The coursework is integrated with the production work to provide a better understanding of the many facets of the theatre. Required participation on stage or backstage on all theatre productions allows the techniques and theories that are examined in the classroom and the laboratory to be tested in a performance setting.
