The Mission of Saint Mary's Catholic High School is to provide a liberal arts education that forms virtuous young men and women who know the Truth and love the Good.
3rd Term - 2020-21
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL KEVIN MUIR
SAINT MARY'S WELCOMES NEW PRINCIPAL
Ms. Tanya Bartlett will be returning to serve as the Principal of Saint Mary’s Catholic High School beginning with the 2021-22 year.

Ms. Bartlett is a distinguished educator with nineteen years in Catholic education in the Diocese of Phoenix. She began her teaching career at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School as a middle school science teacher. She found her niche working with high school students at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale. For over ten years she taught Social Studies and English, later serving for five years as the Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. She has also served as principal of Saint Gregory’s Catholic School and interim principal at Saint Mary-Basha Catholic school. Ms. Bartlett also taught in the Humanities department at St. Mary’s High School.

With her undergraduate degree in History from the University of Arizona and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, Ms. Bartlett brings a wealth of experience in increasing student achievement, teacher development, and community building, all while honoring the Catholic liberal arts tradition established at St. Mary’s. She was awarded the Program of the Year from the Center for Arizona Private Education for the "Legislative Action Project," a program that empowered students to engage in the civic life of their communities and local government. She also worked with the superintendent of schools in the Diocese of Mbeya, Tanzania to help open a new Catholic teacher’s college.

Ms. Bartlett is a native Arizonan and a product of Catholic education herself. In her free time, she loves to read the classics and history, bake bread and desserts, and learn something new every day. She loves to travel and regards her time studying Dante’s Commedia for a summer in Siena, Italy as the current high point of her adventures. “Living the experience of the Catholic Church, no matter where you are in the world, helps me understand the significance of the family of God. It’s amazing,” she states.

The foundational passion that guides Ms. Bartlett’s life is providing opportunities for young people to encounter Jesus Christ and grow in their understanding of this relationship and their purpose in life. She says, “Catholic schools provide hope for a world that needs it desperately right now. The world needs the true and beautiful message that these teachers and students bring to it, along with the authenticity of living it out daily. St. Mary’s High School has a long tradition of being a faithful and compassionate witness to the community and I hope to continue its incredible legacy.”

DEVELOPMENT
2021 Taste of Saint Mary's a Huge Success!
Saint Mary's hosted its annual Taste of Saint Mary's event as the city and state began to climb out of COVID. The fantastic food was provided by Spinning Pigskins, and chef, Saint Mary's head football coach Jose Lucero! The event also featured a wonderful bar with an array of drinks, roulette, blackjack, and craps tables, fantastic silent auction and raffle items, music and friendly atmosphere that was enjoyable to all! The event raised over $40,000 for Saint Mary's, despite a city mandated cap of 200 people.

ADMISSIONS
Thank you for your prayers and support throughout our admissions season. It was a busy time filled with High School Placement Testing (HSPT), prospective freshman interviews, first round acceptance letters, and Merit Scholarship awards. We were so excited to host the Class of 2025 at our Freshman Welcome Event! Students had the opportunity to meet their guidance counselor, play games with future classmates, pick up their class t-shirts, and have their picture taken at the Saint Mary’s Arch. We are continuing to accept application for both our incoming freshmen class, as well as for transfer students. If you know of anyone that is considering Saint Mary’s send them our way!
For more information, or to recommend a student, please contact Mary Pivonka, Director of Admissions or Jacquie Kennedy, Director of Recruitment.

St. Mary's rallies past Paradise Honors for 4A boys...

Damin Lopez watched his father David win an AIA title in 2009 as basketball coach at Phoenix St. Mary's. Now he's part of the school's legacy as well. The No. 1 Knights secured their first since that one, turning back a pesky No. 2 Surprise...

FINE ARTS
Saint Mary's Drama Club Presents Macbeth
Saint Mary's Drama presented Macbeth this past spring in Wiegand Auditorium. It is one of William Shakespeare's most intense and often performed plays. The play chronicles the life of Macbeth as he seeks power by any means necessary. He is supported in his thirst for power by his wife, Lady Macbeth. But as Macbeth learns, his power comes at a severe price, ending with his own world collapsing. Macbeth is defeated and a new king is declared.

Congratulations to Isak Bond and all the cast members for this riveting interpretation of Macbeth!
Students in the performing arts and in the freshman art classes were pleased to share their work, Covid-style, through our Virtual Performances and Presentations, recorded in the Weigand Auditorium and sent out electronically in March, April, and May. If you missed it, here are the links!

Blood Drive a Huge Success!
On behalf of Vitalant and the Saint Mary's National Honor Society, the members of the NHS Blood Drive Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the April 14 blood drive at St. Mary's. Your support of this drive will help to assure that blood is available for patients in need.

At the blood drive, 41 lifesaving donors stepped up to donate, resulting in 30 procedures for our community and reaching 100% of St. Mary's blood drive goal!

Your efforts and the support of the entire St. Mary's community are greatly appreciated and will go a long way toward assuring a strong blood supply, and ultimately saving lives. Watch for our next blood drive in the fall!
