PROGRAMS
Luncheon Recap:
We had a great time hearing from Jessica Sharp this past Wednesday.
She educated us on unconscious bias and ways we can mitigate it.

Check out some key takeaways below:

  • Humans have a biological need for community and connection.
  • We are meaning-making beings – we create meaning out of so many things (i.e. overthinking why your friend hasn’t texted you back yet).
  • We all have biases against certain groups of people
  • Biases are activated involuntarily, without awareness or control and can be positive or negative.
  • Identifying and naming your implicit biases can result in feelings of embarrassment and shame. It’s important to practice self compassion and understand that your biases do not inherently make you a bad person, they make you human.
  • It’s also important to learn to identify your triggers and learn tactical strategies to mitigate the impact of your biases in your decision making.

You can learn more about implicit biases in this helpful video.

July Non-Profit Spotlight
Habitat for Humanity strives to see a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat helps individuals work towards affordable home ownership, home repair and home weatherization.

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County has an open-door policy. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work — regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any other distinction.

Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds, and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer services on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Many Ways To Further Habitat’s Mission
  • Builds and Home Preservation: We need help for both new construction and renovations.
  • Restores: Learn how we recycle items for families' new homes.
  • Family Services: If you'd like to work directly with Habitat partner families, our family services department is the place for you.
  • Admin: These volunteers are vital to our work, performing tasks such as maintaining volunteer information and helping organize events.

Even during this time of social distancing, we can still meet new young professionals and connect with old ones.

Give a virtual coffee date or lunch chat a try (don’t knock it until you try it).

There are many free tools that allow us to connect and grow personally and professionally during this time (Facetime, Google Hangouts, Zoom, etc.).

Take a photo of your virtual hangout. Then follow and tag @gvlchamberyp on Instagram and @GreenvilleChamberYP on Facebook and hashtag #GCYP or #GrabACardGrabACoffee for a chance to win a prize.

If you’re a GCYP member, and you want to connect with a young professional in a particular industry, reply to this email or direct message us on social media.

We’d love to help you expand your network.
