Measles? Bird flu?

No, it's democracy breaking out!

CCL's solution to climate change is democracy.

(Name one dictatorship working to solve it.)

Everyone receiving this newsletter understands that our democracy is under threat. This should not be a partisan issue, but one of patriotism and survival. There will be no solution to climate change without a functional democracy and competent government.

On June 14, Flag Day, Americans from all over the United States will gather to voice their objections to the dismantling of our cherished democracy and the government agencies -- built with our tax dollars to serve the public -- fundamental to our security, economy, our future and our standing in the world. Passing climate legislation in Congress is pointless unless the agencies charged with carrying out those programs remain functional, e.g. EPA, DOE, NOAA, NWS, NASA, HHS, NIH, CDC, FDA, etc.

For more info on how to participate, click here.

You are invited to the Marin/Sonoma chapters' call on Saturday, June 14 at 9 AM here,

followed by CCL's National call

at 10 AM here.

The topic will be climate change and wildfires.

CCL's National Conference will take place

in D.C. July 20-22. Check it out here.

The White House Vision for Dismantling Science in One Simple Plot

Substack

The White House released its vision for science, research, and development late Friday afternoon, May 30. It is catastrophic. If enacted, proposed budgets for FY 2026 mean that research and programs within NIH, NSF, and NASA would be slashed, or cut altogether. NSF would lose $5B, NASA $6.8B and NIH $18B. These are not incidental budget cuts – they represent reductions of more than 50% to core programs. Hundreds of thousands would lose their jobs. The economy and lives are at stake. It seems imperative to convey the magnitude – or at least try.

Super-wonks will find links to the detailed charts and formal budget proposals in the article.

[These suicidal budget cuts must be opposed. They are disastrous for America's economy and leadership in the world and a gift to our competition. It's probably safe to assume that no senate Dems will vote for it, but call them anyway. And if you have contacts in states with Republican senators, now's the time to urge them to contact their senators, who are now under intense pressure. CCL should do so nationally. -- PJ]

The Weathermen and women have a forecast: it's going to be foul.

The (mainly young) men and women who comprise our National Weather Service recently collaborated to produce 100 hours of live streaming broadcasts, from May 28 through June 1, detailing the damage already inflicted on their ability to accurately predict weather events, which are becoming more deadly every year. Here's the intro.

Some of the topics they covered:

Start here and get an inside look at the dismantling of a critical public institution most of us have taken for granted but will miss when it's gone. Then let your voice be heard.

The Tipping Points of Climate Change — and Where We Stand | Johan Rockström

Should your climate anxiety level need to be further jolted into the stratosphere, tolerate 18 minutes with this world renowned scientist, who explains why earth scientists are "getting nervous" to say the least.

He demonstrates that climate and other environmental tipping points are already here, that the changes are accelerating, buffering systems are weakening, we are way behind and about to lose control....

But there is still hope that if we act really fast we might be able to stabilize Earth's climate in a habitable zone, a great reason to finally harness the enormous power of the global energy economy by deploying CCL's (and the US economics profession's) proposed carbon fee, dividend and border carbon policy to forcibly apply the brakes on fossil fuel demand -- thus supply and emissions -- before it's too late. It's not the only thing we must do, but it's essential. Focus on demand reduction by raising the price in a way people will tolerate --by governments not keeping the revenue -- rather than focusing on throttling supply, which may be inexhaustible if suppliers are motivated to drill deep enough.

Do Not Miss This Series!

If you've already seen it, watch it again. You'll then understand how we got into this mess -- Denial, Doubt and Delay -- and what it will take to get us out: Massive popular political pressure supporting robust solutions that this industry and their agents will inevitably oppose.
