International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

Did you know that the transatlantic slave trade affected over 15 million men, women, and children for more than 400 years?

August 23 is recognized annually as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This day is observed in memory of all victims of the slave trade and tries to promote critical examinations of such current behaviors that could lead to forms of exploitation and slavery. It is also a day that celebrates people’s fight to get freedom from slavery.

Because of the holistic horrors that slavery had on its' victims around the world, and the residual effects it has their descendants, it is easy for people to dismiss slavery as existing "a long time ago".

In particular, African Americans are acutely aware of the past and current affect that slavery and racism has within our current society.

However, history can repeat itself, if we are not diligent in recognizing the importance of human dignity and every human being's right to freedom.

One of my favorite quotes is from writer and philosopher, George Santayana:

"Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it"
In parts of the world today, illegal forms of slavery still exist. Human slavery in any form is wrong.

On this twenty-third day of August, let us all reflect on the importance of learning history, understanding the consequences of inaction and ignorance, and not allowing the indignities of the past repeat themselves.

This is but one important step in maintaining a socially balanced and abundant life!
