Mr. John Gahvejian Donates $1 million to Valley Children's Pediatric Plastic Surgery Practice and Precision Medicine in Genetics
Mr. John Gahvejian, and his late wife, Lorrie, have generously donated $1 million to support the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Practice and precision medicine at Valley Children’s Hospital. Mr. Gahvejian’s generous gift will support Dr. Michael Galvez’s pioneering work in pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as efforts underway to expand precision medicine at Valley Children’s.
Mr. Gahvejian and his family have a long history of generosity toward Valley Children’s, including a $500,000 gift in 2016 to support the construction of the Maternal Fetal Center at Valley Children’s pediatric facility in Fowler. “We are tremendously grateful for Mr. Gahvejian’s continued generosity to support critical initiatives at Valley Children’s,” said Rob Saroyan, President of Valley Children’s Healthcare Foundation. “John and his family have been remarkable supporters of Valley Children’s for more than two decades. The Gahvejian family’s gift to support both the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Practice and precision medicine at Valley Children’s is the most recent chapter in a long legacy of generous investment in Valley Children’s. We are honored to be able to recognize Mr. Gahvejian with recognition in our hospital commensurate with the large-scale impact he has made over many years.”
Mid Valley Packaging was founded by John Gahvejian 41 years ago. John is now retired. His daughter, Carrie, has taken the role as President and continues the family tradition. The primary goal of Mid Valley Packaging is to serve its customers with a variety of products while focusing on a level of service that is second to none.
“It has been a privilege to support Valley Children’s and other Valley institutions through philanthropy,” said Mr. John Gahvejian. “Valley Children’s has done so much for Central Valley families over many generations. I hope that my gift will help Valley Children’s continue to provide world-class care for generations to come.”

Walmart and Sam’s Club Raise $484,166 to Help Valley Kids Live Better
Walmart and Sam’s Club ran a fantastic campaign to raise funds for Valley Children’s this past summer. The 31 stores in the Central Valley raised an incredible $484,166 for the Hospital. Walmart associates were excited to host in-person events and interact more closely with customers following 2020's campaign that had taken place the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Walmart and Sam's Club associates raised funds through miracle balloon sales, car shows, dance competitions and so much more.
We are so grateful for all their efforts in making this year’s campaign a big success. We offer our gratitude and a big congratulations to the highest-fundraising locations, including our overall champion and top Divisional Walmart (Store 1877 in Porterville), top Neighborhood Market (Store 5635 in Visalia), and top Supercenter (Store 5843 in Patterson). We recently celebrated these stores with their very own pizza parties! Thank you, Walmart and Sam’s Club!

Valley Children’s Honors Longtime Fresnan and Philanthropist John E. Horstmann for a Lifetime of Service
Valley Children’s Healthcare Foundation wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. John E. Horstmann, who passed away on July 4, 2021. In addition to helping many Fresno area nonprofits including Fresno State and Saint Agnes Medical Center, Mr. Horstmann has generously supported Valley Children’s for decades, including serving as a connector to many of his friends who have become lifelong supporters of Valley Children’s.
Mr. Horstmann’s successes as a businessman and leader were many. He was a lifetime member of New York Life's highest honors and a founding member of The Nautilus Group, New York Life's premier business and estate resource center. He achieved Lifetime Member of The Million Dollar Round Table and was a platform speaker at their convention in 1985. In 1976, John and Lollie formed Horstmann Financial and Insurance Services, an employee benefits insurance brokerage operated by his daughter, Kathy, and son, John. He was named "Man of the Year" in 1990 by the Fresno Life Underwriters. In 2001, he was named to the Central California Excellence in Business Hall of Fame. Perhaps more importantly, he was widely regarded as a person who volunteered so generously for many organizations. When asked why he felt so passionately about volunteering, his answer was, "It's easy. Fresno has been good to the John Horstmann Family." He believed in giving back all he could. John's dedication to the Fresno community did not go unnoticed, as he was the 2013 recipient of the Leon S. Peters Award
Regardless of all his other accolades, his greatest success and greatest joy was his family. His love and devotion to his wife, Lollie, had no limits. Being able to work alongside his children, Kathy and John, and watch them succeed brought him great joy. He took continuous delight in being "Grampy" to his grandchildren, Sam, Jack and Kristen. He was genuinely interested and curious in all their achievements and always wanted to know, "Is there anything I can do to help?" While honored by all the accolades of others, his family was how he measured his successes.
He is survived by his son, John H. Horstmann; daughter, Kathy Horstmann Huebert, who is a Valley Children’s Healthcare Foundation board member and member of La Feliz Guild, and her husband, Robert Huebert; grandchildren, Jack and Kristen Horstmann and their mother, Diane Foster; grandson, Samuel Huebert and his wife, Amanda Wright Huebert, along with the Judy Wright family; and sister-in-law, Sue Horstmann.
The Valley Children’s family will miss John dearly.
