Grace Center for Adult Day Services
The new approach to long-term care
Since 2006, Second Step has had the true pleasure of working with Grace Center's staff and program participants.

Grace Center has being delivering compassionate, expert adult day services for almost 40 years.

Its specialized services provide seniors and adults with disabilities opportunities for exercise, socialization, and cognitive therapy while their family caregivers receive the benefit of respite.

Grace Center's story is shared with us by Tera Stegner, Director Of Community Relations. Enjoy!
Specialized adult day services,
thriving participants
Since 1983
"In 1982 a task force was created in Corvallis, Oregon, to research and make recommendations on how an old church sanctuary could be better utilized to serve the community. The task force soon focused in on the relatively new field of adult day services.

"Oregon had identified “day care for the elderly” as one of the most significant unmet social service needs in the state.

"Based on the recommendations of the task force, Grace Center for Adult Day Services was founded in 1983 as a separate 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization with an adopted mission , “ to provide day services that optimize the cognitive and physical abilities of seniors and adults with disabilities so they can remain as independent as possible and in their homes .”
Meeting a growing demand
"Initially, Grace Center operated a couple days a week for a few hours at a time.

"However, growing demand coupled with innovative and caring services provided by Grace Center led the organization to continue to expand and enhance its services and operational hours.

"Today, Grace Center operates five days a week, 10 hours a day, benefits from the guidance of a 12 person Board of Directors, employs a staff of 19 dedicated professionals, and utilizes the support and passion of approximately 100 volunteers each year."
Supporting and serving
"Adult day service facilities provide health, nutritional, social, and activities of daily living (ADL) supports in a professionally staffed, group setting through a non-residential setting.

"For 35 years, Grace Center has directly provided support and services to the growing population of individuals and families in need."
Helping adults with disabilities
"Grace Center currently serves approximately 100 seniors and adults with disabilities per year.

"Program participants come from a tri-county region, 65 percent qualify as low or moderate income level individuals, and all participants require at least some ADL support."
Providing environmental enrichment
"Program participants typically come to the facility on a regular schedule to access therapy, participate in enrichment programs, and engage in socialization with other participants and staff.

"All participants, whether due to physical impairment, cognitive impairment, or both, can no longer live home alone safely and therefore a family member such a spouse, adult child, or parent has become their primary caregiver."
Offering caregiver respite care
"Grace Center’s program allows the participant to access the services they need in a professional, welcoming, and safe environment while their caregiver receives respite to go to work, take care of shopping, or focuses on their own health and well-being. "
Certified provider
"The demand for day services service continues to grow.

"Currently, Grace Center is the only certified adult day service provider operating in our tri-county area.

"Grace Center holds two specialties: memory care and post-rehabilitation."
Post-rehabilitation specialty
" Grace Center is unique in the state of Oregon as the only adult day center with a post-rehab specialty in addition to its memory care specialty.

"In post-rehab, Grace Center works with adults who are recovering from strokes, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), or major surgeries.

"The center also works with participants who have neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple-sclerosis."
Professionally trained staff
"Participants come to Grace Center at the later portion of their rehabilitation journey. They have been released from a rehab center, have moved back home, and have nearly completed their physical and/or occupational therapy (PT or OT).

"Grace Center’s professionally trained staff (Program Specialists and Participant Specialist) work with participants to complete their individual therapy exercises.

"Our staff provides them the space and supportive environment for them to be successful in carrying out their exercises and therapies given to them by their PT or OT."
Improving success rates
"These exercises and therapies are vital to the individual’s long term success of keeping or improving their mobility and level of independence.

"Having the Grace Center as a place to support them gives them a higher success rate as they continue in herapies.

" Grace Center also relieves their family caregivers from having to facilitate those therapies. This allows the individual and their family to enjoy and operate in their familial relationship, rather than that of caregiver and care-receiver relationship."
State of the art gyms
"Grace Center has two gyms with state of the art exercise machines and therapy equipment.

"A key component of Grace Center’s post-rehab specialty is the use of our two Second Step Practitioners Gait Harness System II (GHSII) ambulators."
Offering the joy of walking again
"The two GHSII have often provided our participants the ability to walk for the first time in years, or ever in their adult life.

"Not only does its use help combat muscle atrophy, avoid pressure sores, build strength and boost self-esteem, it also provides participant new found freedoms such as strolling in our garden, working in our raised beds, and doing things independently that bring them joy, like feeding chickens.

"The GHSII's help Grace Center remain one of the most specialized adult day centers in the state and a place that people are given the chance to thrive."
