Gift Ideas from Up North

The holidays are here and there are lots of great gifts on the shelves of our Mom & Pop shops in and around Burke.  You won't find crowds or aisles and aisles of mayhem here, but you will find genuinely helpful folks, no pressure atmospheres and unique products.

Of course, there are lots of ways to please your favorite outdoor enthusiast.  East Burke Sports has a great selection of bikes, skis, clothing and gear, not to mention friendly staff with expert knowledge to help you find just the right gift for your favorite skier or biker. Right now they have bikes available for 20% off and bicycle clothing at 50% savings.   Village Sport Shop has two locations stocked with equipment and accessories for everything from biking and skiing to water sports and hunting.  Get over there soon for the 2018 demo bike sale!  Over in Island Pond, Simon the Tanner is a must stop for brand name clothing and footwear including Merrell, Camelbak, Uggs, The North Face and more.  Definitely, check out the bargain basement for, you guessed it, amazing bargains!

Just a quick gander around Burke and you'll notice lots of heads adorned with colorful hats from Skida.  Get in on the warmth and style and pick yourself up a hat, bandana or maybe a shawl from the new cashmere collection  Skida products are available at select local shops and online.

And for the fat-biker in your life, head over to Fat Bike T-Shirts on the world wide web to get them some duds to go with the sport.  Choose from the classic shirt or one of the new designs.

There's more to this town than just bikes and slopes, though.  Many artists and crafters live and work here.  Visit the NEK Country Store to see and buy some of their creations including photography, hand-knit items, pottery, wooden sculptures or specialty foods like maple syrup and hand-made jams.

Just down the road, you have to visit Sam and Weeza at Sanderson's Wooden Bowls.  They'll be glad to invite you in the studio where they take local hardwoods and turn them into beautiful wooden bowls of all sizes.  They even have pens made with wood salvaged from the old East Burke Dam.  Of course, you can also meet some cute goats and donkeys, too!

Over in Sutton, High Beams Lighting sells beautiful hand-made lamps, shades, wall sconces and ceiling lights to brighten up any home.  These one-of-a-kind creations feature brass, copper and mica with botanicals and images of nature often incorporated in the designs.

If you're on the NH side of things, check out Colonial Antiques in West Lebanon for all sorts of treasures whether it be a tea kettle, an antique dresser or some music on good ole' vinyl.

Of course, it's not the holidays without some chocolate in the stocking or on the table.  Definitely head over to the little yellow candy shop, Burke Mountain Confectionery, for decadent treats and truffles with flavors including Spiced Eggnog, Maple Bourbon, and even, Maple Bacon.  For a special breakfast treat, check out the peppermint bark pancake mix.

Naturally, you need a tree to put all those presents under.  Ruggles Christmas Trees supplies us with the display of trees decorated in East Burke Village and they would be glad to be your tree supplier, too. Look for them this season in the parking lot at The Freighthouse in downtown Lyndonville.  And no worries if you aren't in Vermont. You can have a Vermont Christmas tree no matter where you live.  The Land Farm ships Balsam Fir Christmas Trees in early December.  Visit their website to learn more and place an order.

Happy Holidays!
