Elevating Preaching Conference

SEPTEMBER 17, 2018

Wake Forest University School of Divinity, Winston-Salem, NC
Sessions will take place in Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest campus.
Come hear from Dr. Jill Crainshaw, Dr. Emilie Townes,
Rev. Alan Sherouse and Dr. Melva Sampson!
Elevating Preaching is a conference that began years ago with a challenge from Buddy Shurden to “elevate preaching.” CBFNC accepted the challenge and responded with two preaching conferences connected to the annual CBFNC Gathering. Continuing to seek opportunities to model good preaching and nurture leadership, CBFNC has partnered with Campbell Divinity School, Gardner-Webb School of Divinity, Wake Forest School of Divinity, and Duke Baptist House of Studies to co-sponsor the annual event.

On Monday, September 17, 2018, the Elevating Preaching Conference resumes with Wake Forest University School of Divinity as host and co-sponsor with CBFNC. Our preachers include:
Dr. Emilie Townes , Dean of the Divinity School and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Divinity School;  Dr. Jill Y. Crainshaw , Interim Dean and Blackburn Professor of Worship and Liturgical Theology, Wake Forest University School of Divinity,;
Dr. Melva L. Sampson , Assistant Professor of Preaching and Practical Theology, Wake Forest University School of Divinity; and  Rev. Alan Sherouse , Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dr. Emilie Townes  will also also serve as the School of Divinity's 2018 Mac Bryan Prophetic Preacher. The Mac Bryan Prophetic Preaching Series was established in honor and memory of George McLeod "Mac" Bryan Sr. by George and Carol Williamson. Bryan was a professor of religion and taught at Wake Forest University for thirty-seven years after joining the religion faculty in 1956. He introduced courses on feminism, religion and science, medical ethics, and black and liberation theology. He fought tirelessly for Civil Rights, pursued social reform, and was instrumental in helping to integrate Wake Forest College in the 1960s. The series brings preachers and speakers to campus who will inspire students to live and serve at the intersection of Christianity and social justice.  Learn more .

Conference Format
Each session will include a sermon preached in the context of a worship service. Following each session, conferees will have an opportunity to dialogue with the preacher about the preparation and delivery of the sermon in light of the theme, Preaching and Worship From the Margins, and the particular service in which the sermon was preached.
