To Friends of Lawrence Academy:
First, a note of solidarity and support. These times have caused us all to recognize how important communities of care are to us.
For decades, Lawrence Academy has received applications from extraordinarily talented students from across the United States and around the world. This fall's incoming class of 126 diverse and accomplished new students is a product of the largest applicant pool in school history. We are excited to watch these young people take full advantage of all that Lawrence Academy has to offer.
Recently, the Admissions Office, administration, and Board of Trustees discussed additional strategies we can employ to expand accessibility to Lawrence Academy’s rich opportunities for a growing number of candidates. At Lawrence Academy, our mission heightens our intent to ensure an equitable application process for students with a variety of diverse backgrounds and educational experiences. The Admissions Office has always sought well-rounded young people who will use the Lawrence Academy experience to fulfill their enormous potential as students and citizens of this increasingly complex world.
In that spirit, and in keeping with the practices of a growing number of peer schools around the country as well as a number of the nation's most selective colleges and universities, the Admissions Office is pleased to announce that Lawrence Academy will implement a test-optional SSAT policy beginning with the 2020-2021 admissions season . Our admissions committee will center instead on students’ interviews, personal essays, co-curricular endeavors, teacher recommendations, community involvement, and transcripts.
Our newly designed assessment process strengthens the Admissions Office’s resolve to deepen our allegiance to Lawrence Academy’s ethos, “The light shines for all.” While we know this decision is appropriate for Lawrence Academy candidates, we recognize and respect the Enrollment Management Association’s efforts to maximize the ability for students to sit for the SSAT – including, but not limited to, the creation of the At-Home SSAT.
Lawrence Academy is proud to be one of the growing number of schools across the country to be test optional.
Warm regards,
Phil Blood
