News from Old First Church
Wednesday, January 25, 2023
Good Afternoon,

It’s not a particularly pretty plant – in fact, the flowers look like the pom-poms that follow the dandelion flower, except that they are yellow. Tiehm’s Buckwheat grows in just one place on earth, 10 acres on the Silver Peak Range in Nevada, also the site of a store of lithium. This week, however, the flower was given endangered species protection. The question is whether it will survive mining interests in the area.

The Bureau of Land Management approved drilling operations in the area (mind you, this is public land, land that belongs to you and me) but outside of the 900 acres it considered essential to the habitat of Tiehm’s Buckwheat. There are people who ask, why on earth worry about some little plant that looks like a spent dandelion?

When we ask such a question, we betray what we claim to be, people who respect God’s creation, which includes more than glowing fields of beautiful wildflowers. This is desert with cacti, bighorn sheep, chukar, and sea urchins and coral fossils, reminders of the water that once covered Nevada. Everything has its place and use.

2023 Financial Stewardship

Greetings to the Old First Congregation,

Our planning for the new year and for the missions of the Church starts now. You will be receiving the stewardship letter and the response form soon. Please return via email, or print and mail a copy to the financial secretary.

Please prayerfully dig into your pockets for our funding of Christ’s business, for our building, and for the community missions for which we've been famous. Bless You!

Yours in Jesus Christ,

Spinach Pie (Spanakopita)
Alice Batcher Howard

• 2lb. or 2 (10 oz.) boxes of spinach
• 1/2 c. melted butter
• 10 sheets filo pastry
• 1/4 lb. Feta cheese
• 1/4 lb. Gruyere cheese
• 1 c. Ricotta cheese
• 3 eggs, well beaten
• freshly ground pepper to taste
• freshly grated nutmeg
• salt to taste

Steam spinach until just tender. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter an 11 x 17 inch jelly roll or similar baking pan. Brush butter on each of the 5 filo sheets; place on bottom of pan. (Keep remaining filo sheets thoroughly covered with a damp cloth.) Drain spinach and stir in Feta cheese, Gruyere cheese, Ricotta cheese, eggs, pepper, nutmeg and salt. Place the spinach mixture on the filo sheets in baking dish; make certain to spread filling almost to the edges of the pastry. Place remaining filo sheets on top, brushing butter on each sheet as you assemble. Cover baking sheet with foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking until pie is golden. Cut into squares or diamonds and serve immediately.
