September Might Be Our Best-Kept Secret

I have always thought September is one of the best months to be in Port Ludlow.

Summer may be winding down, but around here that doesn't mean things are slowing down. The days are still beautiful, the trails are calling, the golf course is in great shape, and our local farms are entering one of the most abundant times of the year.

There is also something different about September. The summer crowds begin to thin, the mornings get a little cooler, and you start to see those first hints of fall around the Olympic Peninsula. It is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy everything our corner of the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

For me, one of the best parts is what's happening in our kitchen. This is harvest season, and Chef Kyle and his team have an incredible selection of locally grown ingredients to work with. Tomatoes, squash, greens, herbs, berries and so much more are making their way from nearby farms into dishes at the Fireside.

September is also a great month to make Port Ludlow your home base for exploring. Play a round of golf, hike the trails (be sure to check out the new mural on the Ludlow Falls Interpretive Trail, seen above), take an e-bike for a spin, head into Port Townsend, explore the farms of Chimacum Valley, or do absolutely nothing except grab a glass of wine and enjoy the view from the veranda.

Sometimes the best getaway isn't about having a packed itinerary. It's about finding a beautiful place, slowing things down a little, eating really good food, and deciding what you feel like doing next.

That's September in Port Ludlow.

We hope you'll come experience it with us.

Cheers,

Dan Ratigan

General Manager

If you'd like to get a little closer to where all that good food comes from, time your visit for the Jefferson County Farm Tour on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20. It's a free, self-guided weekend — a suggested $10 donation per car — when farms across the county open their gates. It's a chance to meet the growers, wander the fields, and see firsthand the people and places behind so much of what we serve.

THE FIRESIDE

Our Local Farms Are in Full Harvest Mode

Each week, we receive fresh availability sheets from nearly a dozen local farms, and right now the choices are incredible. Tomatoes, greens, herbs, berries, vegetables and so much more are coming in at the peak of the season.

Chef Kyle is taking full advantage—bringing in as much locally grown goodness as we can use on our menus, along with some extra-special finds that our culinary team will pickle, preserve, and prepare so we can continue sharing the flavors of our local farms in the months ahead.

If locally sourced, freshly harvested, and expertly prepared sounds good to you than you should make your reservation now.

It doesn't get much more farm-to-table than this.

Washington has proclaimed September "Eat Local Month," a statewide tip of the hat to the farmers, fishermen, and food artisans who make this kind of cooking possible. Around here, eating local isn't so much a seasonal campaign as it is the way we've always done things — but it's a good excuse to celebrate the people who grow, raise, and catch what ends up on your plate.
