Dear Jaguar Family,
Simply stated, I am delighted to join the Governors State University family as your sixth president. And, as a native Chicagoan, it feels good to be home again!

When classes moved off campus in wake of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, many thought student clubs and organizations at
Governors State University
would hit pause, but GSU's Jaguars are moving forward.
Club leaders say it's not enough to just continue to function at a time when in-person socialization has been at an all-time low. Now, engagement in student life is especially important.

NEH CARES Act
|
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) was founded on the principle that the humanities are critical to the nation’s success as they connect people and encourage empathy.
It’s a philosophy embraced by
Governors State University’s
Associate Provost Rosemary Johnsen, recently selected to review special NEH grants for cultural institutions. The grants, a total of 317, will allow institutions such as museums to continue essential work, halted by COVID-19 orders to stay home and social distance.

GSU Provides PPE in Pop-Up Shops
|
Governors State University (GSU) is partnering with community and faith-based organizations serving the South Suburbs and Chicago’s South Side to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) in an effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Dr. Tonya Roberson, Director of Community Engagement, Program Development and Academic Support in the GSU College of Health and Human Services, said the South Suburbs and the South Side are made up of close-knit neighborhoods—not just zip codes. Residents are working together to secure PPE, including masks which limit the spread of droplets.

Governors State University is committed to offering an exceptional and accessible education that prepares students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed in a global society.

the
Center for Performing Arts
(CPA) at
Governors State University
welcomed 17,000 patrons, a testament to the power of live performance. But when a pandemic abruptly closed its doors, the CPA staff pulled together a rich list of
virtual resources
to keep the community connected with the fine arts and provide a spotlight for hope.
To spread the word to CPA patrons, community members and educators, CPA staff began sending weekly emails dubbed
Theatre Thursday
,
Family Fun Friday
and
Opera Up Closer
to offer patrons a glimpse of cultural events they can enjoy from home.

Governors State University
student-athletes, coaches and administrators were involved with numerous community service projects during the 2019-20 school year, which afforded GSU
Athletics
the chance to engage in NAIA Champions of Character initiatives.
The NAIA Champions of Character program promotes five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Going out into surrounding communities, Jaguar student-athletes modeled those values by performing hours of service projects.

In ancient Greece, the Agora served as a public square for athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life in the city-states.
Governors State University
continues the tradition by serving as a public square for thought leadership and expression. We invite you to peruse in the public square with "The Agora": a showcase of faculty, staff, and student talent and achievement here at GSU.
