A Word from Tim...

Just read a short book by Oliver Sachs called Gratitude. It is really four essays about him turning eighty and then finding out he has a terminal illness. I read it because of this phrase, "The redemptive inspiration of a well lived life". It sounds worthwhile doesn't it? Oliver Sachs was quite healthy up until he was eighty one. The spring of his 82nd year he found out that a dormant cancer had metastasized and that he had only a few months to live. I am sure some part of him felt unfortunate and why did he have to get sick? And yet what he expresses in these essays is gratitude for the adventure of living. It is a place I would like to live always. What if everyday you/we could awaken thrilled to be included in this adventure called life. It sounds so good that I have to wonder why we don't. Of course it is the burdens of our lives that veer us away from this mindset. Those burdens come from different experiences that we have had that change our perceptions. What once looked promising can look overwhelming as a result of stressful events. Have you ever been robbed? It changes your perspective so that you feel unsafe in the same situation you had felt very safe before. That is a burden and some of these burdens can haunt us for a life time. Trauma, neglect, stress in childhood can have many long term effects. We know this and have heard it so much that it seems like a second sense. In the book Sachs suggests that gratitude addresses such burdens. An attitude of open gratitude felt and appreciated lightens the load and changes the psyche. It is makes it worth practicing gratitude always. The last chapter is called Sabbath. He grew up as an observant Orthodox Jew. He stopped that practice early in life but throughout life had always been appreciative of the idea of Sabbath. A time to appreciate what really matters away from the busy turmoil of life. And an affirmation of all that is good. Gratitude for all of it is a life well lived.
