Dear GMS Families,

The close of an academic year is always a time of reflection for Greensboro Montessori School’s board of trustees, when we evaluate our performance as a board, the performance of the head of school, and the School’s progress on our Long Range Strategic Plan. This year, we have more to reflect on than we could have imagined just a few short months ago. Sometimes, it takes a crisis to bring out the true character and strength of a community — and our School has rallied behind the students, families, and faculty, while still continuing on a productive, strategic, and hopeful path into the future. The fortitude, generosity, and kindness shown by you and our GMS community has been impressive and appreciated.

The board of trustees is charged with governing the School’s stability, development, and sustainability; ensuring its financial health; and guiding the School toward a strategic and mission-aligned vision for the future. This year, our role has become even more critical. We have responded to the circumstances of the past three months by working closely with your head of school, Dr. Kevin Navarro, and his administration team. We’ve collaborated on policy changes and have remained actively involved in decisions impacting the financial health of the School. We’ve also been kept apprised of and are wholly supportive of Kevin and the entire administrative team’s management of these circumstances and ongoing preparations. These interactions have only fortified our confidence in Kevin’s ability to deftly manage unforeseen circumstances and to venture through complexity with an unwavering commitment to students, families, faculty, and the School.

Though the School is still sailing in uncharted waters, we are fortunate to have a solid financial foundation to sustain our operations. As you might imagine, we anticipate temporary financial stress on our operational budget for the coming school year due to new pressures and procedures related to COVID-19. Kevin and the administration team are carefully preparing the needed resources to help see us through these unusual circumstances and to position the School to weather these temporary challenges.

We fully anticipate another strong year for Greensboro Montessori School in 2020-21, marked by well-rounded, rigorous, and caring educational experiences. Though on-the-ground procedures may look different this fall, our vision for the School remains the same: to provide the best personalized and hands-on educational experience for our students — one that empowers them to positively impact the world. And our commitment to you remains unchanged: just as your children faithfully tend to their work in the classroom, we will forge ahead to bring our long-range plans and dreams for the School to fruition.

On behalf of the entire board of trustees, we thank you for your continued dedication to Greensboro Montessori School. We welcome your questions, comments, and aspirations for our shared community, and look forward to partnering with Kevin and his team for another memorable school year in 2020-21.
