Dear Griffin Nation,
One of the great measures of Upper School Athletics is the fun and excitement of competition. If you’ve been to a volleyball or basketball game at the GHNO gym, you know that it’s packed with students, families, and visiting school fans. It’s a fun experience.
We wanted to give you an inside glimpse into a normal high school game night at the GHNO gym. On Tuesday, our 3 high school volleyball teams played at home against Devine High School. Throughout the 3 games, we had over 400 fans, 70+ student-athletes from GHNO and Devine, 6 coaches from both schools, 6 parent volunteers running admissions and concessions, 1 athletic trainer to administer care to injured athletes, 2 faculty members manning the score table, and 1 police officer to help make sure our venue is safe throughout the night. It was a fun and busy night!
As a school community, we are so thankful to be able to host sporting events at our school. We couldn’t do it without our families. Thank you to the following volleyball parents who gave of their time to man admissions and concessions last night: the Collins family, the Infurchia family, Mrs. Abigail Kuiper, and Mrs. Amy Salzwedel.
We won’t bore you with the Accounting figures every newsletter, but we wanted to address a common set of questions that we receive…why do you charge admission for games? Or why do you charge so much for admission to games? Here’s the accounting ledger from last night’s games:
Income on 9/1/26:
-
$323.00 in online ticket sales
-
$780.00 in cash from admissions and concessions
Costs on 9/1/26:
-
$530.00 to pay officials
-
$225.00 to pay the athletic trainer
-
$150.00 to pay score table
-
$160.00 in supplies for concessions
Profit/loss from games on 9/1/26:
We set the price for tickets with the goal of breaking even after the cost of officials, trainers, score table, and supplies. Sometimes we lose a little money, and sometimes on a well-attended game like Tuesday, we end up making a little bit of money to go back into Athletic programs.
As it relates to home games, we wanted to provide you with a short list of Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind:
- DO come to games
- DO cheer and support our teams
- DO volunteer to help with admissions/concessions
- DO encourage your students to avoid electronics (phones, AirPods) because it takes away from the excitement of engaging with classmates and cheering on the team
- DON’T send your students out into the courtyard or the playground
- DON’T shout at referees or be negative towards the opposing team or fans
Thanks for taking the time to read this glimpse into a GHNO game night! Now on to our game results, future games, and other Athletic highlights.
