Anniversary of the ordination of women |
This week marks the 50th anniversary of the first ordination of women in the Episcopal Church. The first class of women - called the Philadelphia Eleven - were ordained at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia on July 29, 1974. Join us in offering a prayer for them, and for the many ordained women who have led - and continue to lead - Christ Church throughout its history.
O God of Persistent Grace, you called the Philadelphia Eleven to the priesthood and granted them courage and boldness to respond, thereby opening the eyes of your church to the giftedness and equality of all: grant us so to hear, trust, and follow your Holy Spirit wherever she may lead, that the gifts of all your people may flourish throughout the earth, through Christ our Savior. Amen.

Lunch-making Outreach Ministry | It's the first Sunday of the month, which means we'll be making 100 bagged lunches for our unhoused neighbors! Join us between services to make sandwiches and fill bags - all ages welcome. Many thanks to Anne & Robbie Curry for providing supplies, and to the Billington family for organizing.
|
Many thanks to our Vestry who will continue their stewardship of our community during their monthly meeting this Sunday. If interested, the most recently-approved minutes are here, and the agenda here.

News about church-led events & updates!
And now the (former) safe room! |
As promised, Kevin next set his expert sights on the room connecting the sanctuary with the parish hallway (and which formerly held the safe.)
In addition to a beautiful patch and paint job, you'll also find a board housing brand new name tags. As you come into church, please grab yours to help us build community (please try not to take them home with you! 🙏) There is also a spruced up zone with quiet kiddo activities - grab a bag or book for your littles!
Stop by to take a peek at her new look, and then let us know what we should call this space now that the safe is no more!

Help us help our neighbors through these outreach opportunities!
Back-to-School campaign for EHDC! | Our summer of EHDC continues with our August campaign to raise funds for their back-to-school campaign! EHDC distributes gift cards to families around the District to offset the high costs of back-to-school needs. Last year we raised more than $4,000; we already have $1,200 in pocket. Can you help us top last year's total?! Donate to the Outreach Fund here, or drop a check in the offering plate throughout August.
|
Many thanks to those of you who joined us last Saturday morning to pack 100 hygiene kits for use by those visiting Shirley's Place, the day center run by EHDC. We look forward to more opportunities like this one, which combine fellowship with the chance to serve others!
|
With record high temperatures, Shirley's Place is flying through their water and drink supplies. Don't forget to add a flat of water to your grocery list over the coming weeks so we can keep our neighbors safe and hydrated. Thank you!
There's still space to sign up to deliver water in August - the whole process takes just 30 minutes!

Community Fellowship Group Updates
Comprised of parishioners as well as other Capitol Hill neighbors, the below groups offer opportunities to engage with our neighbors around shared interests.
The group is off August 2, so join us via Zoom on Friday, August 9, at 7 p.m. to discuss Witness for the Prosecution (1957), an Agatha Christie-based courtroom murder mystery, a classic film that is surprisingly light hearted, starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. Free on Tubi. For more information contact Paul Laymon or Ellen Psychas.

"We all know people who have responded to adversity by growing angry, cynical, and bitter. We also know people who have walked through hard things and come out the other side with larger spirits - wise, kind, and generous. Which of these people do we hope to be?" Hear Rev. John describe how Jesus models the answer to this question.
Past sermons are always on our website.
