Dear Steve,
DID YOU KNOW that two new studies laud the benefits of organic, grass-fed whey protein powder?
One study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined serving whey protein before a meal in order to lower blood glucose levels. This is known as a "premeal". Researchers found whey protein premeals lowered post-meal blood glucose, reduced gastric emptying rate, increased peak insulin, and elevated plasma concentrations of GLP-1 (which is what Ozempic's function is).
Another study from Current Developments in Nutrition found evidence that whey protein supplementation may improve multiple clinical indicators of glucose control, along with triglycerides and blood pressure, in groups of adults at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online | On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in later December 2023.

Blood Sugar Balance Update
Steve: Here's the most interesting research from the last six months.
Curcumin
Researchers in a Frontiers in Nutrition study found significantly lower serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP) and hemoglobin A1c (HBA1C) levels in a curcumin supplemented group versus the placebo group. This group also showed significant improvements in postprandial hyperglycemia and insulin sensitivity indices. Our findings indicate that curcumin may reduce low-grade inflammation and thus improve insulin sensitivity and postprandial hyperglycemia.
Hypoglycemia
Protein intake within 4 hours before exercise may shorten hypoglycemic episodes during moderate physical activity in teens with type 1 diabetes, as reported in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
Results of a 12-week randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in Journal of Ovarian Research showed that co-supplementation of vitamin D and probiotics significantly improved inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, along with hormonal and mental health parameters in women with PCOS.
After receiving repeated doses of artemisinin, a small group of women with PCOS had lower blood testosterone levels and healthier-looking ovaries, researchers report in Science. The results suggest artemisinin compounds, which are already known to be effective against malaria, lupus and cancer, could also be used to alleviate symptoms of PCOS.
Women with PCOS are responsive to vitamin D supplementation above 2000 IU daily, according to a study in Nutrition Reviews.
A study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that higher magnesium intake had a significant association with lower risk of PCOS in a large group of women.
Light at Night
A study in The Lancet found that people who were exposed to the most light between 12:30 AM and 6 AM were 1.5 times more likely to develop diabetes than those who remained in darkness during that timeframe.
Best Exercise for Type 1 Diabetics
A study’s findings from American Journal of Cardiology suggest that continuous aerobic exercise may be the most effective for improving blood sugar control in people with Type 1 diabetes, particularly for women. Continuous exercise, which involves maintaining a steady, moderate pace throughout the workout (like jogging, swimming, or biking for 30 minutes), led to more significant reductions in blood sugar levels compared to interval training.

Steve: As a nation, we are doing an awful job preventing type 2 diabetes. According to a new study from American Journal of Preventive Medicine, type 2 diabetes increased by almost 20% between 2012 and 2022 in the United States. The increase occurred among all sociodemographic groups. Let's go through some pearls for how you can help lower these ghastly statistics.
Genetic Risk
A study from The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that a healthy diet and regular exercise reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes even in individuals with a high genetic risk.
Eat More Vegetables
The risk for type 2 diabetes over 12 years was 26% and 25% lower among those in the highest and moderate quartiles of cruciferous vegetable intake, respectively, than among those in the lowest quartile of cruciferous vegetable intake, according to a study from The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Balance Gut Microflora
Bacterial biodiversity was lower in patients with prediabetes than in healthy individuals, according to a study in Nutrients. Two easy ways to balance microflora? Take targeted pre, pro, and postbiotics which include soluble and insoluble fiber, beneficial bacteria strains, and Urolithin A, respectively.
Magnesium As Preventive and Therapeutic
Magnesium is inextricably linked to promoting beneficial blood sugar markers. However, for those who need diabetes medication, especially metformin, it is associated with elevated risk of magnesium deficiency, which may weaken the association between metformin and lowering of certain blood sugar markers, according to a study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It is critical to supplement with magnesium as a preventive, but especially important if you have to go on medication to balance blood sugar.
Get Up and Move
The first study to show that getting adequate exercise can counteract the elevated risk of mortality associated with sitting for long periods of time each day, even for people with diabetes, was published in Diabetes Care. The authors also suggest that exercise without sitting for long periods of time is the most ideal option.

Several months ago, I asked Steve for guidance on eliminating Zoloft. I had needed the drug for about 18 months, but after managing through specific stressors, I wanted to stop taking the medication.
Steve’s insights into my lifestyle, eating, and body chemistry allowed he and my physician to guide my gradual Zoloft elimination by adding two supplements, GABA and L-Theanine.
I successfully eliminated Zoloft, which has significantly improved my overall well-being. Steve reached out over the process, giving me guidance and encouragement.
With his advice, over several years, I have eliminated inflammatory foods and stopped taking Lorazepam and Zoloft. I have emerged stronger and feel so much better.
Sincerely,
Appreciative Client

Unleashing Your Potential
In Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul, a chiropractic intern writes about going on a mission to El Salvador. On the first day 100’s of people lined up at 8am, some traveling more than four hours by bus. The conditions ranged from severe scoliosis and back injuries to heart problems and diabetes.
Half way through the morning a six year old boy was brought in by his mother as she was concerned about him continually being sick. The intern examined him and found that one of the vertebrae in his upper neck was severely misaligned. He received an adjustment and it was suggested that he continue with care every day as the intern was there for a week.
The next day the young boy arrived with a big smile on his face as he received his second adjustment. On the third day he presented again with a big smile on his face as did his mother. She was elated and explained that her son had been shy with difficulty talking, making sounds and articulating his words. It seems the adjustments of his neck enhanced his ability to communicate. He began talking the way a normal six year old boy would and could now express himself.
The intern left El Salvador with touching memories of how grateful the patients were for the Chiropractic care that they received. Understanding that there is a hidden potential waiting for all of us to be uncovered. What’s yours?
