#2.) In-Person Trade Shows Matter

Why They are So Important - A Vendor’s Point of View

Gary Roskin –

Roskin Gem News Report –

David Siminski, Vice President of Global Sales & Marketing at United Precious Metal Refining, Inc., is passionate about in-person Trade Shows. And he’s going to tell us why.

Speaking to the visitors, buyers, and exhibitors at the New York Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) Show at the Javitz Convention Center, Siminski gets straight to the point. "It's a great show. We have great vendors. But ... One vendor might say, ‘I’m having a great show.’ But the vendor next to him might say they’re having a lousy show. It’s the same show! You’re seeing the same people walk by!”

So what’s the difference?

#4. Emerald Auction in the Panjshir

What we have for you here are several reports on the emerald auctions that have been taking place in Panjshir, Afghanistan.

We reached out and heard that the Taliban control the auctions, from start to finish.

After the Taliban allow the people of Panjshir to work in the mines, they hold auctions – 15 auctions so far.

The miners have sold over $3.6 million in goods at auction, reportedly many lots of low quality, purchased by gem dealers. The Taliban government then takes their 10% royalty tax.

Following Noah - an Artisanal Miner

Malawi Aqua Looks Promising

Gary Roskin –

Roskin Gem News Report -

Alfred Noah of Afro Gifts Mining Pvt Ltd Co, now mining in Kasungu, is finding aquamarine.

Noah is a prospector and artisanal small scale miner, who, along with his brother Harrison, are currently prospecting in the Kasungu area of northern Malawi.

“The first day we were hitting some surface low-grade material with some clean portions,” described Noah. Good cabbing material. “We extracted 22kgs of aqua from a vein we encountered today. There are some nice milky gems, but what we are also finding [and are very excited about] are some of the finest aquamarine colors ever from Malawi.” As they went deeper, the clarity got better, and the color deepened.

The British Museum is reportedly suing Dr. Peter Higgs, a former curator, who they believe stole and sold much of the 1,800 missing gems.

This story has actually been going on for several months now. The museum first accused Higgs of possibly stealing the gems reportedly back in August. (British Museum sacks staff member after items vanish from collection) After months of trying to get Higgs to confess, the museum is now going to court.

The High Court has ordered the disclosure of eBay and PayPal records from the eBay account of the suspect, former curator Dr Peter Higgs. The museum says these records contain evidence of its items being sold online. The court was told Dr. Higgs intended to dispute the claims.

Cambodia Hosts 15th Gems & Jewelry Expo

By Xinhua

Global Times

Mar 22, 2024 08:35 AM

PHNOM PENH, March 21 (Xinhua) — The 15th edition of Cambodia International Gems and Jewelry Fair kicked off here on Thursday, aiming to boost trade of precious stones and jewelry, a commerce official said.

Ministry of Commerce’s Undersecretary of State Tan Tepikanika said the five-day event would give a great opportunity to manufacturers and traders to showcase their products to national and international customers.

“The gems and jewelry industry is one of potential sectors that has contributed to Cambodia’s trade and economic growth,” she said at the opening ceremony of the exposition.

Cambodia had some 851 million U.S. dollars from export of precious stones and jewelry to the international market in 2023, an increase of 261 percent from the previous year.

Tepikanika was confident that Cambodia’s free trade agreements with other countries would boost the country’s exports of gems and jewelry in the long term.
