Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario Celebrates Groundbreaking Ceremony for Two Homeowner Families in Drumbo

DRUMBO, ON – DECEMBER 8th, 2021 – Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario is excited to celebrate the Virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony for two future Habitat homeowners; Laura’s family and Kristen & Ian’s family in Drumbo, Oxford County. This semi-detached Habitat home build is sponsored by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada and Oxford County. Join in the celebration by watching and engaging with the Virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony livestream on Habitat Heartland Ontario’s Facebook page on December 9th, 2021 at 11:00AM.
Laura is happy to provide her 8-year-old son Addison and 6-year-old daughter Emma with a home to call their own. Laura says, “Throughout my life I have shown my kids that you can dream big and accomplish anything through hard work and dedication; however, I knew the reality of owning our own home was still something I couldn’t give to them with the current housing market, no matter how hard I worked. This is so much more than a house, and we will forever be grateful to Habitat for Humanity for allowing us this opportunity.”
Kristen and Ian look forward to raising their 1-year-old son Nikolas in a home that is safe and affordable in a welcoming community. Kristen and Ian say, “Even with a stable income, it has not been possible for us to buy a home. We have been saving for years, but prices keep soaring. The day we were asked if we would like to partner with Habitat to become homeowners was one of the greatest days of our lives. We are thrilled to have a home of our own with a safe backyard for our son to play in and grow a garden.”
Both families have strong ties to the Drumbo community and look forward to raising their young children in safe, decent, and affordable homes in the area.

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground on this build for two families in Drumbo, Oxford County,” says Brian Elliot, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario. “As we embark on this exciting new build that will bring much needed affordable homeownership opportunities to the region, we would like to thank the community of Drumbo  for rallying behind this build, as well as the Township of Blandford-Blenheim for helping us secure the land to build on. This hand-up for two hard working families wouldn’t be possible without the support of our Diamond Hammer sponsors Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada and Oxford County. Habitat Heartland is also grateful to the Drumbo Lions Club for championing this project in the community. Thank you to all our supporters for helping Laura’s family and Kristen & Ian’s family build a better future through Habitat homeownership.”

“We are excited to be part of this special day for two Oxford County families – to them, I say congratulations. Any time we are able to help a family safely build a life in Oxford, it’s a win and a step forward in our commitment to provide more affordable housing in our communities. We are thankful to work with Habitat for Humanity and appreciate their efforts to bring these opportunities to Oxford County,” says Oxford County Warden Larry Martin.

“The Township of Blandford-Blenheim is truly excited and thankful to have been chosen as a location for Habit for Humanity. To see the look of relief and joy on the faces of our soon to be new residents was nothing short of heartwarming. On behalf of council and myself we look forward to this project starting and finishing for two well deserved families,” says Mark Peterson, Mayor of Blandford-Blenheim.

“It's such a pleasure to be working with the committed team from Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario. The Drumbo Steering Committee, made up of volunteers from the Drumbo Lions Club, are thrilled to help make Laura and Kristen and Ian's dreams a reality. Personally, I am humbled by the community engagement we have already seen for this project,” says Nancy Demarest, Councilor for Blandford-Blenheim and Habitat Heartland Drumbo Steering Committee Chair.

Habitat Heartland is looking for community members to volunteer on the build site.  Those interested in volunteering on the steering committee can contact the Habitat Heartland Volunteer Manager for more information at kforrest@habitat4home.ca
