Groundbreaking Kicks Off
Construction!
|
|
On Friday, November 3, Fair Oaks EcoHousing members gathered to break ground on our cohousing community—culminating more than 10 years of planning!
About 60 enthusiastic people showed up for the Groundbreaking and the celebration afterwards at the Smokey Oaks Tavern. Many people complimented the architect and Fair Oaks EcoHousing group on the beautiful design of the community.
Future residents brought their shovels and actually broke the ground to kick off construction (luckily, the forecasted rain held off!).

As part of the celebration, featured guests included Development Consultant Katie McCamant, Civil Engineer Richard Rozumowicz, Construction
Project Manager Darryl Berlin, Architect Chuck Durrett , Founder and future resident Marty Maskall, Builders Rachel & Katherine Bardis, and Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters.

|
Future residents at the event had much to say.
From Marty Maskall: "I was thrilled to see how many people joined us for the groundbreaking. Supervisor Susan Peters complimented the future residents on our persistence to pursue our vision. I can't wait until the homes are built and we can move in."
Residents from
other cohousing communities in the area also lent their support.
Bob Miller, from Wolf Creek Lodge Cohousing in Grass Valley, said:
“We need more cohousing communities. I was delighted to join the Fair Oaks EcoHousing community and celebrate your major accomplishments. You have land, a bank loan, a general contractor and only three more homes to sell. Congratulations on your perseverance.”
From Anne Geraghty, Washington House Cohousing, a forming group in West Sacramento: "What an exciting day—to see all of you there with your shovels, spades, and smiles. We are looking forward to following in your footsteps. Thanks for leading the way!"

Intention Makes Community
|
|
Cohousing is one form of intentional community—designed around shared values, cooperative work, and feelings of belonging and mutual support.
Shared living goes back thousands of years, of course, but in today’s society, isolated living has become the norm. Isolation leads to loneliness and affects physical and mental health.
So how do we overcome isolation and build strong bonds with our neighbors? With intention.
Like other cohousing communities, Fair Oaks EcoHousing has created space for shared activities and collaboration. Members are committed to collaborating with and supporting each other, while maintaining a balance between privacy and cooperation.
Intention makes all the difference in realizing a close-knit community.
