Lamar Alexander "The Education of a Senator" May 27
Woodmont and Parnassus Books are pleased to present an evening with Lamar Alexander to celebrate his new book, The Education of a Senator, in conversation with Clay Stauffer. This free event will take place at Woodmont on Wednesday, May 27, at 6:30 PM in the sanctuary, with doors opening at 5:30 PM. Books will be pre-signed and Senator Alexander will have a signing line directly following the conversation on stage where you can get your book personalized.
The book is a behind-the-scenes story of the last sixty years of American politics, told with purpose and humor by a political legend who worked with ten presidents, made deals with both Obama and Trump, and believes that serving in public office is the best way to help the largest number of people and to keep our Republic from falling apart.
Signed copies of The Education of a Senator will be on sale at the event.

Groundbreaking Ceremony this Sunday - May 17th!
by Clay Stauffer
| | |
This Sunday, May 17, at 10:45 AM, we will officially break ground on our new Family Life Center on the western part of our campus. We have been visioning, planning, and working on this for the past few years, and now it is time to make it a reality. This Life Center will completely transform our campus and help us address many of our current space and parking needs, creating an opportunity for our mission and programs to grow. Over $21M has already been committed over a three-year period. Construction should last roughly 15 months. Our hope is to be in the building in the fall of 2027. Here are the main objectives. You can see the pictures below.
- Develop the Campbell West portion of our property with a Family Life Center (2.3 acres west that we own)
- Heavily invest in our youth and children’s ministries for the future
- Build a new home base for our youth ministries adjacent to the new gym and cafe
- Free up additional space for our children’s ministries (current youth space)
- Build a multi-use gymnasium that can also be used for worship, speakers, and large events
- Add significant parking capacity to our property (70 additional spaces)
- Build a Connection Cafe that will serve as a hub for gathering and fellowship
- Add additional multi-use classrooms for all ages, including seniors
- Create a beautiful green space between the buildings for outdoor events and activities
- Continue the momentum and growth that our church has experienced in recent years
Woodmont remains a vibrant church in the heart of Nashville, TN. As we all know, our city is growing and changing and so is our church. Generations have gone before us and generations will come after us. This church will continue to be a light in our community that changes lives and spreads the hope and love of Christ. Please join me on Sunday for this historic and exciting day!
Blessings,

Important groundbreaking info for this Sunday
Groundbreaking for the new Family Life Center will begin at 10:45 AM in the side yard just south of the former Campbell West site. There will be a mound of dirt to mark the spot. The groundbreaking ceremony will last about 15 minutes.
We are asking members walking to the groundbreaking site from the sanctuary to either:
- Exit at the FRONT of the sanctuary (to the right of the pulpit), down the stairs, and through the West Entrance doors, or,
- Exit out of the BACK of the sanctuary and around the north side of the building, and then through the back parking lot, and take the Campbell West sidewalk.
Coming from The Bridge:
- People may exit through the south portico (chapel) or doors at the Johnson Commons (children’s area) and take the alleyway behind the church to the Campbell West sidewalk, or,
- Walk through the children’s area downstairs and exit through the West Entrance doorway beneath the sanctuary.
Our friends requiring assistance walking should be encouraged to take one of the elevators down and then go through the West Entrance doors.
Parents must pick up children BEFORE the groundbreaking.
Deacons and Shepherds will be on site to assist with directing flow. Unfortunately, there will be no car access to the back parking lot.

Summer parking info
As we begin construction on our new Family Life Center, we understand that we will have reduced parking through the summer. It would be helpful for families, as much as they are able, to come to church in one vehicle. We have also arranged for Woodmont members to park at Calvary Methodist in the row of spots lining Hillsboro Pike. Please do not park in spots other than these - they have been reserved for Calvary Methodist worshippers.
Woodmont members may also park in the Boy Scout lot diagonally across the street from the church. We will have a MNPD uniformed police officer assisting with traffic and with our members who are crossing Woodmont Blvd. Woodmont leadership is currently working on other options for parking as we move toward Homecoming Sunday in August. We will let you know as these are arranged.
Thank you for your patience as we move through this exciting time of building!

Vespers Service May 31
Do you have 45 minutes to lower your stress and draw closer to the One who promised "rest unto your soul?" Our Chancel Choir will share their annual service of meditation, scriptures, and music on Sunday, May 31, at 5 PM in the sanctuary. Choir members will express their personal thoughts on each anthem before it is sung. They will perform works by Richard Proulx, Maurice Duruflé, Johann Michael Haydn, Charles Edward Ives, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tom Fettke.

The Ten Commandments for Today
Since the Ten Commandments are in the headlines – debate over whether to put them in school classrooms – we ought to know what The Ten Commandments are and how they speak to our society today.
You’re invited to join a Bible Study and discussion on the Ten Commandments during the months of May and June.
Time: 9:30- The Disciples Sunday School Class (Room 105) and 11:00 – The Reflections Class (Room 200)
Both classes will deal with the same lesson – one of the Ten Commandments each week. The two times are offered depending on which worship service you attend.

Woodmont Traditions
by Roy Stauffer
| | |
In a rapidly changing world, where change is increasing in speed all the time, it’s important to have something you can always depend on, believe in, and expect to be there. Another word for this might be “tradition.” A tradition might be defined as the regular observance of certain behaviors or celebrations which keep our lives secure in a changing world, and in the church keep our spiritual values strong. Traditions are passed down from year to year or even from generation to generation. Traditions provide security, stability, a sense of belonging, and even anchors of the soul.
In our Christian heritage and history some of the more important traditions are called sacraments. Here at Woodmont we observe two such sacraments: Baptism and The Lord’s Supper. These have been observed and celebrated for thousands of years ever since the time of Christ. I can’t imagine any church without at least these two sacraments.
Besides Baptism and the weekly Lord’s Supper, Woodmont has many other rich and valuable traditions which continue to make our church strong. Just an off-the-top-of-my-head list might include:
- Wednesday night suppers and breakfasts at church
- PJs and Pajamas
- The Senior Mystery Trip
- Summer Camp & Conference
- The annual Father-Daughter Dance
- Bagpipes on Homecoming Sunday and other special occasions
- Trunk or Treat
- Walk Thru Bethlehem
- Christmas Eve worship
- Lent
- Holy Week observances, including Maundy Thursday and Good Friday
- Putting flowers on the cross at Easter
- Easter sunrise worship outdoors in Haught Chapel
- The annual Easter Egg Hunt
- Vacation Bible School
...and the list can go on and on.
One of my personal favorite Woodmont traditions is getting ready to happen again this summer. That is the annual Wednesday night Sing-Along followed by a potluck supper.
On Wednesday nights in June and July, we gather in Room 105 for 45 spirited minutes of gospel singing. David Regen was leading this when I first came to Woodmont (in 2008) and we still use a songbook that he put together. Some of the songs I’d never really heard before but now I love them – songs like “I’ll Fly Away” or “I Saw the Light” or even “Takin’ A Road Trip.”
All kinds of musicians gather to provide live music playing the piano, guitars, banjo, violin, the dobro (do you know what that is?), bass cello, accordion, spoons, harmonica, fiddle, and more. There are usually 12-14 musicians up front while the room fills with spirited gospel voices. Sometimes children dance in the back of the room while the singing is going on. Sometimes there will be a solo or special number… like “The Preacher and the Bear.” Sometimes a family brings it – mom, dad, and kids.
And then there’s the Potluck Supper. Everybody brings one dish and we put them all together and share. Some bring salads, or vegetables, or a meat dish, or rolls, or fruit, and all kinds of desserts. Fried chicken still seems to hold the “favorite” spot. Some Wednesdays, when the crowd is really large, you think, “Will we have enough food to feed everyone?” But somehow somebody manages to multiply the loaves and fishes and no one has ever gone away hungry.
We’re just a few weeks away from that first kickoff Wednesday. So warm up your vocal cords and whet your appetite cause it’s going to be another soul-inspiring summer with our annual June and July tradition.

Celebrating 26 Years of Leadership Woodmont
This Sunday in all three worship services, we’ll offer time and space to celebrate 26 years of Leadership Woodmont— an enduring ministry of our church created by the Rev. Beth Pattillo during her years as Associate Minister for Adult Education and now continued through the faithful work of many. Beth is quick to say Leadership Woodmont is the ultimate group project, made possible by the steady leadership of people like Sandy Smith, past board members, 13 program leaders, generous financial supporters, and nearly 300 participants.
Leadership Woodmont invites participants to learn how best to answer a simple, transformative question: “Where is God in this?” Along the way, participants explore biblical models of leadership, spiritual gifts, and spiritual types, then “try on” spiritual practices that help shape a personal guide for living. The journey includes discerning God’s presence and intention for their lives and culminates in a personal plan for ministry—an answer to the question, “What is God calling me to do next?” Those plans have taken root at Woodmont, in the wider community, and in ongoing practices of reflection and deepened spirituality.
What began at Woodmont has also blessed congregations beyond our own. Leadership Woodmont is now used in churches around the country under the name “Faith Leader,” extending this ministry well outside the walls of our building. We’re grateful for all who have shaped this program over the past 26 years, and we look forward to celebrating together in worship this Sunday.
