Syracuse Campus Composting

Due to a change in our compost hauling arrangement, paper towels in restrooms on the Syracuse campus will no longer be composted for the foreseeable future. We have opted to sunset our contract with an external hauler to achieve substantial cost savings and to ensure that compostable food service items make their way to an industrial compost facility. Moving forward, grounds staff will bring our compost to Syracuse University, who will then haul it to an OCRRA compost facility.

All food scraps will continue to be accepted as compost, as will most of the single-use food service items used in campus cafés and at campus events. However, we ask that you continue to prioritize reuse over single-use products in all instances, so please take advantage of the Trailhead Café’s reusable container program. Keep ESF’s Free Food Alert program in mind if you have excess food after an event or are looking to enjoy leftovers.

Email the Office of Sustainability with questions or to share concerns.
