Facilitating Successful Group Work
|
|
Wrapping up week two and heading into week three, we want to provide you with strategies that may be helpful if you are planning on incorporating group work into your course this semester. Group work can help to motivate students, encourage creativity, and provide critical thinking opportunities. Take these into consideration to set the stage for successful group work.
-
Assign Group Roles: Assign or ask students to self-assign to a variety of roles to ensure that all students have a clearly identified role within their group
-
Provide Checkpoints: Using student (office) hours, consider having each group check-in for 7-10 minutes to allow for reflection and feedback
-
Identify Potential Challenges: Help your students troubleshoot any challenges they may be having in their group, whether that's pre- or mid-project

Teaching Advice
"Cultivate practices outside the classroom that inform, inspire, and energize your teaching."
Three practices significant to my teaching are illustration, tango, and meditation. I'll talk briefly about illustration.
Working as a professional illustrator illuminates the gap between theory and practice. Teachers present a neat theory of process on paper, but the reality of process is messy and uncertain. So I talk to students about uncertainty or any other messy part of process. How does it feel? How do you deal with it? Uncertainty is not a flaw in the system; it is simply another part of the process. My engagement in creative practice challenges me to be more precise and grounded in my teaching.

#CyThx Message
Miriam goes above and beyond as an instructor in all of the classes she teaches. Rather than just teaching the material, she goes out of her way to make sure students know the skills they need and pushes you to create better design work that you are passionate about. Miriam is such a considerate instructor who brings passion, fun, and creativity to every class period. Miriam is my favorite instructor that I've ever had and I am so happy I've had the opportunity to take her classes!
