Message From the City Manager
|
Greetings City of Grover Beach,
I was on a call this week with local government and health care officials from across the county when the frazzled voice of a healthcare worker came on the line. They were describing the difficult conditions our local hospitals are facing with COVID patients who are arriving sicker with more severe symptoms than earlier in the pandemic. This health care worker described the exhausting work our local hospitals are doing and got emotional talking about the toll on our medical professionals who have been at this nonstop for 18 months.
It was a stark reminder that while we as a society may be done with COVID, COVID is not done with us. Over the past month, the numbers of active cases, hospitalizations and deaths in our county have risen to levels not seen since the beginning of the pandemic, if ever. These aren’t just made-up numbers seen on a social media site, these are actual numbers from the local hospitals we depend on to heal, fix and save us in our times of need. When our hospital directors tell us they’re running out of beds, this means that there may not be hospital capacity for our loved ones or ourselves when we face a time of need. Such needs transcend how one feels about vaccines, politics, masks or other things that all too often divide us.
There is an emotional and mental weight with this reality after what we’ve been through as a community since March 2020. I feel this as both a City Manager and more importantly as a son, father and husband. So what can we do within our community in Grover Beach? Get vaccinated, wear a mask and keep physically distancing – all the public health guidelines and advice that we’ve received. It’s working in California as a whole, as the state has the lowest current case rate of any state and one of the highest vaccination rates in the nation with 82% of those eligible getting at least one dose. However, we are behind locally as 70% of those eligible in the county have received one dose and 64% in Grover Beach. The vaccine is safe and easily available at pharmacies and the County Public Health clinic at 286 South 16th Street. Wearing a mask in indoor public places as required by the County is also important as part of the layer of protection for ourselves and others, and is a small step we can take together.
I haven’t covered COVID to this degree in previous issues, but I felt this was a timely message given what we’re experiencing. I remain confident and optimistic in our ability to get through this and fully and safely enjoy the activities, businesses, schooling and events important to us. The City of Grover Beach will continue to play a key role to help our economy prosper, address housing and homelessness challenges, keep our community safe, and improve our streets and other infrastructure for those who live and work here. As I tell our staff team, it is important for us to be calm, demonstrate competence and show compassion for the community we serve.
Thank you for being part of our community and we urge you to continue to take steps to be safe and healthy in these times. Let us know what we can do to assist you at (805) 473-4550 or [email protected].
Sincerely,
Matthew Bronson

In preparation for National Crime Prevention Month in October and as part of its mission to uphold a safe and wholesome environment in which all community members can thrive, the Grover Beach Police Department is encouraging residents to start neighborhood watch programs throughout the City. Nicole Retana grew up in both Southern and Northern California before moving to Arroyo Grande in 2003. It was a big transition for Nicole to move to a small town, but she grew to love living and working in this community.

Prior to her job with the City, she worked for the County of San Luis Obispo in the Planning and Building Department for 15 years where she started as an Administrative Assistant III and worked her way up to Secretary II. Frequently Asked Questions
|
|
Do I need to wear a mask indoors?
|
|
Grover Beach residents and businesses have done a great job in taking steps to keep our community safe and we need to continue this in light of the highly transmissive Delta variant. Our local hospitals are experiencing a significant surge of COVID-19 patients which means there’s less capacity for treating other health issues like heart attacks and strokes.
The best thing we can all do is get vaccinated and wear a mask in indoor public spaces to create a layer of protection for ourselves, our families and others around us. The County Public Health mask order applies throughout San Luis Obispo County and we ask our residents and businesses to comply with this simple and effective step to help protect our health care capacity for all of us. City government continues to work with the County and community groups like the South County Chambers of Commerce to help our community be safe and healthy. We will get through this together, Grover Beach! For more information, visit EmergencySLO.org.
