Alberta Homegrown Fruit

There are so many fruits you can grow in your own backyard! There is a wonderful variety of fruit that not only thrive in our cold climate, but many of them are also compact enough for the average yard. Here are some great ones to try:

Raspberry

One of the easiest fruits to grow! Raspberry plants can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and require minimal pruning each year.

Try 'Double Delight' for tasty, large berries from August to first frost. 'Brandywine Purple' has large, sweet fruit and is a cross between a red and black raspberry.

There is also an interesting yellow variety called 'Fall Gold', a high producer of sweet and juicy fruit.

Blueberry

Though most blueberries are self-pollinating, we suggest planting two or more for better yields.

'North Country' has a wild blueberry flavour, growing to a compact size of 2'x2'. 'Northsky' and 'Polaris' are very hardy with flavourful berries and also provide ornamental value, with leaves turning red in fall.

Romance Cherry Series

These sour cherries were developed at the University of Saskatchewan. Very cold hardy, productive and great for fresh eating and baking.

Try 'Romeo' with large, dark berries, some of the best for fresh eating. 'Carmine Jewel' is also excellent for fresh eating, baking and preserves.

Saskatoon

Incredibly hardy, saskatoons are easy to grow, producing pretty white flowers in spring followed by tasty purple berries in summer.

Try 'Martin', with delicious fruit ripening in mid-summer. 'Smokey' is one of the most productive varieties, suitable for fresh eating, baking or jams.

Apples

There's nothing like homegrown apples for eating and baking.

Try 'Odyssey' with fruit similar to a Gala apple or 'Gloria' for fresh eating and cooking. For a columnar shaped tree, consider 'TreasuRed' suitable for narrow spaces, growing 16 feet tall and just 4 feet wide.

Edmonton Horticultural Society Garden Tour
