Sermon Recap

Sharable Quote

The more we mature, the less it’s about us - Jesus modeled that when He sacrificed Himself for us

Growing Together

In the questions that follow, you will review and expand on the teaching your experienced.

John 2:12-14 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father.

14 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Questions

1.    What does the Apostle John write to little children (new believers) in this passage? Why do you think that is important?

2.    What does He write to young Christians in this passage? Why do you think that is important? How it different from little children?

1 Timothy 4:8-9 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.

Giving Together

Now it’s time to make some personal applications to all we’ve been thinking about in the last few minutes.

It’s also a time of giving to one another, because as we share…we Give Ourselves.

1. What is the significance of recognizing that spiritual growth is not a single event but a lifelong journey? How does this perspective change our approach to growth?

2. In the context of the sermon, how is spiritual growth different from just gaining knowledge? Why is it important to distinguish between the two?

3. How do you balance the pursuit of knowledge about God with the application of grace in your life, as mentioned in the sermon?

4. The sermon emphasizes that in the Christian life, we are either progressing or digressing. How do you ensure that you continue to progress spiritually?

Going Together

Part of “together” is how we live when we aren’t together.

Here are some questions to clarify our shared purposes until we meet again.

Hebrews 5:11-14 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

1. In the sermon we talked about 3 phases of spiritual growth.

The Encounter Stage - When you first meet/encounter Jesus.

The Education (discipleship) stage - When your progress from info to repetition to mastery.

The Experiential Stage - Where you KNOW God experientially.

What stage do you think the recipients of the book of Hebrews were in?

2. What did he mean by being dull of hearing?

3. What is required to gain a skill? In verse, 13 he calls them unskilled...what is he trying to say? Then in verse 14 he refers to being trained in constant practice, what are some constant practices we need to be training in as believers?

4. What stage of spiritual development are you in? Why? What do you think is your next step to keep growing and developing?

Application

What does this mean for my life today?

Matthew 7:16-18 You will recognize them by their fruits...

1. How can we help you take your next step?

2. Who in your circle of influence would benefit most from your continued spiritual growth?
