Grow With Us

Spring has been sharing so much with us each day. Every new day brings a fascinating nature discovery - for our staff and our many school children visiting us all of April and May. The glimpse of the garter snake basking in the sun, the beautiful song of the Cat Bird or Song Sparrow, or the joyous leap of a Green Frog on Palmer Pond.

Whatever you discover, be sure to share it with us this spring. As summer's arrival is almost upon us, our Spring iNaturalist Observations are coming to and end soon.

There’s so much abundance on the horizon! Next week, issue #2 of Radicle, our nature ‘zine, will be available in our Little Free Seed + Book Library, at the Barn Owl Corner, and digitally on our website. We’re featuring the deeply moving work of indigenous poet Tanaya Winder, student-submitted articles about PA natives, a clever way to forage for your dinner, and more! Pick up a copy and feel free to share, and submit your ideas, art, and photos. As if that’s not enough fun to look forward to, we have a new plant offering in the coming days. A limited number of seedlings will be at the Little Free Seed + Book Library for you to plant in your vegetable garden or patio pot – keep an eye out on our social media pages for details.

Pawpaw

Asimina triloba

Pawpaw is a tree in the Annonaceae or the Custard Apple family which are widespread throughout the tropics. The pawpaw is the only member of this family to be found in the temperate regions of North America.

The pawpaw tree produces an oblong fruit that weighs six to twelve ounces. The fruit has a deep yellow, creamy textured flesh, and a taste described as a cross between a banana, mango, and pineapple. It contains large seeds that are easily removed.
