Leading Through Influence

As spring unfolds, it invites us to reflect on the essence of the word itself. Derived from the Old English springan—meaning “to leap, burst forth, grow”—spring is a season of renewal and possibility. Perhaps this season encourages us to particularly embrace new growth, both personally, and in those around us.

Often, we assume that inspiring others to grow and move forward requires authority. Yet, true leadership is rarely about command—it’s about influence. In this month’s feature article, Chief People Officer Jerilyn Olson explores the Archimedean approach to leadership, reminding us that the most powerful levers for change are not control, but influence.

Leading Through Influence

by Jerilyn Olson, Chief People Officer

"To lead others well is to love others well. Leadership is not about what you can get done. Leadership is about inspiring others to do well."

Imagine you’ve been tasked with a project, but it requires you to rely on the efforts of people over whom you have no authority. In a complex setting where you must influence but can’t control, what will often not work (but is still tempting to do): just keep shouting louder, try to convince the “higher leader” to demand change, or try to do all the change yourself.

How can we think differently? Allow me to offer wisdom from philosopher (and scientist) Archimedes, who said, “Give me a firm place to stand and a lever and I can move the earth.” When you want to move something that seems to outsize you, a lever and fulcrum can be quite powerful – literally and metaphorically.

Reflections on Change

Grow with Great Hearts invites you to reflect upon and apply content from our feature articles and other stories to your own practice of leadership.

This month's prompts, in the spirit of retrospection:

  1. Often one of the most challenging aspects of persuasion is pathos—finding the time and space to really hear others, to understand deeply their feelings and perspective. How can you more intentionally build time and space to hear others and to process and address their perspective?
  2. What is the significance of Olson's "bonus" ideas kairos and topos in rhetorical appeal?

Incoming Headmaster - Trivium

This month a new incoming Headmaster was named at Trivium Prep in Goodyear, Arizona. Longtime teacher and secondary leader Michael Johnson will assume the role this summer, and benefit from a robust transition under its current Headmaster Dan Schutten. Hear from Mr. Johnson about his vision for the next era at Trivium.

Michael Johnson, Incoming Headmaster

Michael Johnson’s journey to Great Hearts began with his wife’s encouragement. He shared, “My wife discovered Great Hearts while searching for a better educational option for our children. I was drawn to its commitment to classical liberal arts education, which I had experienced in high school. She was also the one who suggested—perhaps even insisted—that I teach at Great Hearts!” After a long career in corporate and operations management, Mr. Johnson joined Trivium Prep, where he has taught Economics, Pre-Algebra, and Biology. He has also taken on various leadership roles, including Assistant Basketball Coach, Safety Coordinator, Dean of Students, and Assistant Headmaster.

“I have always enjoyed serving others, be it as a teacher, a Dean, or as AHM, Mr. Johnson, says, “and the role of Headmaster allows me the opportunity to potentially help everyone at Trivium; meaning scholars, teachers, and parents, and not just certain groups. The obvious challenge with this is that it involves everyone at Trivium, which will be my greatest opportunity in the years ahead.”

Mr. Johnson looks forward being as visible and as available as he can – delegating tasks where possible and living by the old axiom about eating an elephant “…one bite at a time.”  “I believe Trivium is at a tipping point,” he shared. “We could relax, focus on rigorous academics, sit back on our test scores, and call that victory; or we could do the more difficult task and draw our community in, work together to build wonderful citizens, and celebrate both victories together as a community. I choose community.”

New Leaders at North Phoenix

Hear from two new Assistant Headmasters in Arizona who have found opportunities for growth and fulfillment in their expanded leadership roles this year.

Michelle Jensen

Assistant Headmaster

North Phoenix Prep

“I find working with our ESS population and mentoring our new Academy Lead very fulfilling, and it’s been such a joy to guide our new Deans this year as well. Teaching both students and adults is my passion!”

When Michelle Jensen’s administrative role in a school district was eliminated due to funding cuts, she turned to a friend for guidance. That friend introduced her to an exceptional new school being built near her home—Great Hearts Glendale. After researching Great Hearts, she felt an immediate connection to its mission and applied for the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) Coordinator role. Reflecting on her early days, she shared, “I felt instantly at home at North Phoenix.”

Mrs. Jensen’s career at Great Hearts has been shaped by a variety of leadership roles at both Archway and Prep, including Exceptional Student Services Coordinator, Regional ESS Coordinator, Dean of Academics, and Dean of Students. These experiences have provided her with valuable insights as she now steps into the role of Assistant Headmaster.

Lee Raper

Assistant Headmaster

Archway North Phoenix

“It brings me such joy to highlight the good work that we are doing on our campus, and there are boundless opportunities to do that because of the strength of our community."

Lee Raper’s path to Great Hearts was anything but typical—it began with a conversation sparked by her father’s work as a vendor for Great Hearts North Phoenix. At the time, she was exploring new teaching opportunities, and her father’s impression of the school intrigued her: “Everyone looks professional and really happy all the time!”

Inspired to apply, Mrs. Raper joined Great Hearts as a 4th-grade teacher, quickly connecting with the mission to nurture the whole child. After three years as a lead teacher, she transitioned into leadership, serving as a Dean for another three years before stepping into her current role as Assistant Headmaster.

In her first year in this new role, Mrs. Raper credits the mentorship of her former Headmaster Geri Kirby, saying, “She made such a significant impact on me as a leader."
