Minding Transitions

As we close out the short month of February when winter slowly turns its direction toward spring, we find opportunities to consider the "messy middle" – those uncertain transitions in our lives, and the great shift we experience when a change finally occurs. When leading others in a time of change, we are called to deeply understand the emotions of and impact on others around us. This month seems fitting to feature an article authored by Alison Westerlind of Ascent Consulting Group for a previous 2023 issue of Grow with Great Hearts, on the topic of leading through change.

Minding Transitions

by Alison Westerlind, Founder, Ascent Consulting Group

“It isn’t the changes that will do you in, it’s the transitions.”

-- William Bridges

“It isn’t the changes that will do you in, it’s the transitions.” William Bridges’ book, Managing Transitions, starts with this short yet profound statement. Transition is a period when the old is no longer, but the new isn’t fully present or formed. Perhaps you’ve experienced a short, uncomplicated transition like a smooth negotiation of a car deal, or maybe it was a more complicated, long and drawn-out transition, such as changing jobs, onboarding, and getting comfortable in your new role. Inevitable with any change there is a time that is uncertain, unclear – a “messy middle” – is the transition, and the part on the journey to change that can cause the most concern, confusion, and challenge. Leaders must acknowledge and plan for the transition. That is the opportunity leaders have to help support their people through the messiness and uncertainty and help show them a path to the change.

Reflections on Change

Grow with Great Hearts invites you to reflect upon and apply content from our feature articles and other stories to your own practice of leadership.

This month's prompts, in the spirit of retrospection:

  1. In Alison Westerlind's article, she shares the 4 P's (Purpose, Picture, Plan, Part) that a leader must endeavor to address when leading through change. Which of these four do you need in order to process change for yourself? How readily do you generally accept change when it's not on your terms?
  2. What are the ways in which you already influence others to realize their potential, and where can you grow in your own ability to influence, to galvanize others?

Tackling the Transition

Hear from two new leaders in Ft. Worth who embraced change and took on Assistant Headmaster roles at our growing Prairie View campuses!

Leah Pittsinger

Assistant Headmaster

Prairie View Upper School

“I want to tackle unfamiliar tasks with an entrepreneurial spirit so I could then turn around and teach the task(s) to others. A great part of my growth is due to the demand for an AHM to efficiently learn to do new things, delegate when necessary, and then support fellow staff members in their own learning.”

Leah Pittsinger came to Great Hearts due to her great love for families, Classical education, and service. “The opportunity to grow in my career, while serving alongside like-minded individuals is incredibly valuable to me,” she shared. As a founding staff member of Prairie View and 2nd grade lead teacher, she stepped into a Dean role in 2023 and now serves Assistant Headmaster of the Upper School.

Ms. Pittsinger finds it incredibly helpful to serve in several roles and engage in development opportunities before moving into the new role.

Isabel Silkett

Assistant Headmaster

Prairie View Lower School

“My experience as both a student and teacher in classical environments has prepared me for success as a mentor and instructional coach. As I have grown into leadership roles, I credit the leaders who invested in me, challenged me, and believed in me."

After spending several years at a classical charter school in Austin, Isabel Silkett had the opportunity to relocate to Fort Worth with her family. In exploring potential job opportunities, she was initially drawn to Great Hearts by her desire to serve families through a free, high-quality classical education. “I am overjoyed to have found an environment that aligns with my personal educational philosophy,” she shared. In joining Great Hearts Prairie View as Dean, she was able gain valuable insights into the Great Hearts culture and curriculum before stepping into her new role as as Assistant Headmaster.
