A Prairie in Progress, and a Community in Action

With generations planting hope for the future.

Friends, over 40 volunteers gathered at Prairie Woods this past weekend to help plant 1,000 prairie violet plugs (small plants with a big purpose). Longtime PWELC supporters and new friends all rolled up their sleeves together. Toddlers knelt beside Grandparents, showing that caring for the land starts early, with small hands learning from those who’ve tended it for years.

There was laughter, muddy hands, and a sense of connection as everyone worked together. People who had never met found themselves sharing tools, stories, and quiet pride in knowing they were part of something bigger than themselves.

These violets are especially meaningful.

They’re vital to the regal fritillary butterfly, a rare species that depends on them to survive. With support from Pheasants Forever, whose grant made this project possible, we’ve taken a major step toward restoring native prairie right here at Prairie Woods.

And this is only the beginning. Later this winter, we’ll plant more native seed and continue caring for this prairie as it takes root and grows into something extraordinary: a living classroom, a haven for wildlife, and a place for people to connect with nature for generations to come.

This kind of restoration has become part of Prairie Woods’ story...

2018 – Pollinator Plot Established

Our first big step toward prairie restoration began with a pollinator planting designed to support bees, butterflies, and other native insects.

2021 – Lady’s Slippers Planted

Volunteers helped plant showy lady’s slippers, which have been a delight to see blooming in June.

Ongoing – Prescribed Burns & Care

We’ve continued to care for the prairie through regular prescribed burns, essential for native plants to thrive.

💚 Looking Ahead

This prairie will keep changing. Growing stronger with every season, every seed, and every hand that helps. What began years ago with a few small plantings has become something much bigger: a place where people come together to care, learn, and watch new life take hold.

Back in 2018, a few young volunteers planted the first seeds of this vision. Now, seven years later, new hands are carrying it forward: planting, learning, and laughing together.

That’s what your support makes possible.

When you give to Prairie Woods, you’re not just helping plants grow -- you’re helping hope grow. For the butterflies, for the next generation, and for everyone who finds a sense of belonging here.
