Hello Ascension_StGeorge,

After leaving a church which I had attended for some twenty plus years whose teachings embraced a philosophy which encompassed one God for all religious traditions and included an Eastern flair, I found Church of the Ascension. After attending for the last 25 years, I have come to learn this church was not as stringent as I had thought Episcopal doctrine dictated. It is much more open minded and as such I have seen changes to our service and have graciously come to accept these knowing that our church leadership is absolutely sincere in their efforts to be more accountable in spreading Christian teachings. Therefore, I will continue my support for Ascension as its path forward continues to serve both us and our community.

Taking the Next Faithful Step

Our Annual Giving Campaign, Taking the Next Faithful Step, has begun. Soon, you will receive a mailing with a letter and invitation to return your estimate of generous, financial support for 2024. That's called 'the pledge.' Every Sunday you will hear a pledge testimony from a member of our leadership, and you will have the opportunity to make your pledge then and there.

You can also make your pledge online at our safe, secure, web-based platform, Realm. Click here.

Questions? Contact Kimberly, our parish administrator, or a member of our Vestry or leadership.

We ask all members to return your pledge of generous financial investment by or before Sunday, November 5 -- All Saints' Sunday and Stewardship In-Gathering Sunday. Thank you!

Our Fall Alpha runs Monday evenings at St. George's parish hall -- 19167 Poplar Hill Lane Valley Lee, MD. There's a common meal and, if you let us know, childcare will be available (let us know).

Thursday Bible Study

Luke + Acts

Bible study meets Thursday mornings, 10am upstairs at Ascension. All are welcome! Click here for the schedule. No prior reading is required, and it's a safe, open space to connect with others and deepend your faith.

This year, we’re taking on an inductive study of the Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles. Luke and Acts are really Part 1 and Part 2 of the same story -- God’s work in the world to raise up witnesses of God’s power (=that’s us!).

Forward Day by Day

August through October 2023

The Forward Day by Day devotional booklets are available at both church campuses -- at the back of St. George's Church on the welcome table, and outside the worship space at Church of the Ascension in the upstairs Khinoo Room.

Brad Holley is back home at their house in Town Creek; he has regular visits from home health provider.s It would be a great help to Murphy if we could support her in her care of Brad. If someone would visit, spend some time with him, she would be able to grocery shop, keep her own doctor appointments, and run errands. Brad still has his sense of humor, his memory for stories, and a great desire to talk football. Call or text Murphy (301) 481-2177 if you would be able to spend some time keeping Brad company so she is able to leave for short periods of time. In his homily on Sunday Father Greg reminded us of how important it is to be part of a community of believers. Here we have an opportunity to show love and concern for own of our members.

Paul’s instruction to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:16-18) is often interpreted as constantly speaking to God. But prayer is not only an outward ritual. It's how we live before God. Praying without ceasing doesn't hold to a certain format or amount of time. It's not limited to a fixed time or place.

Even when our hands are busy, we can still pray to God. Free or busy, sick or fearful, whether we have difficulties or not, and even if we have transgressions, we can communicate with God in every moment, in every place, and in everything we are doing – that is praying without ceasing.

Let us pray for the following members and friends of Resurrection Parish, including those who our members and friends have asked us to hold in prayer --

ANNIVERSARIES

Rich & Julie Coughlan (10/26)

A ministry for all to be present and to love.

It has been a long month for the Eldredges to welcome a new family living in our cabin. The Rasooly family, Hashmat, Wazhma, Hadia, Madasar, and Lida came to live with us at Grace Cottage when we were able to connect to Good Neighbors of Capitol Hill. GNCH is a sponsoring organization supporting many refugee families from many countries that are currently in turmoil.

The Rasooly’s are from Afghanistan who came here, invited by our military, because their lives were in danger as Hashmat was an interpreter, imbedded in our military service in Kabul. It has been a blessing in so many ways as we get to know this family more every day. They are wonderful people with great generosity and appreciation for their opportunities here in the United States.

It has also been a real learning curve for us in that we have experienced the frustration that the marginalized population endures in order to take advantage of government services. The services we all hear about that are available to the underserved are not very available. They require a very long and tedious process with many obstacles that disqualify many people.

If anyone is looking for a really good cause, I can assure you this family is. I thank you so much for all the support I have received from you so far and the Rasooly’s have been very appreciative of your gifts. I had a grand time with the children taking them to Famous Footwear, where all the kids got new school shoes thanks to several of you. Even the store personnel got involved.  Until Hashmat gets a permanent job, they will continue to need your support. This week, however, Wazhma will be working at the Potomac Early Learning Center at Christ Church in LaPlata. Again, the challenge is that Wazhma needs to get a background check and fingerprints, costing over $50.

I hope that in the future, I will be able to bring them often to our churches so that you all can get to know them better. Their stories are amazing, but they are theirs and I want you to hear from them. I can tell you this - they are grateful to be here and are honestly and earnestly trying to be regular contributing members in their new community and country.
