More Than Stitches: Equipping Women
and Youth for Sustainability
Volunteers at the POC Sewing Studio work with clients to teach them how to use sewing machines and read patterns, but the impact goes far beyond sewing. Under-resourced women gain practical skills, such as hemming clothes, which builds confidence in their abilities and helps them to contribute meaningfully to their households.
The Sewing Studio promotes sustainability for our families and the environment. Women gain tools that grow with them by encouraging lifelong learning and practical skill-building. They pass on responsibility, creativity, and the value of caring for others, building stronger households and more mindful communities.
By repurposing discarded fabric, participants create unique, eco-friendly items. In partnership with the Kenneth Young Center at the Alive Teen Center in Hanover Park, the studio introduces local youth to sewing through hands-on projects.
In collaboration with Palatine Cool Cities, the POC Studio produces reusable fabric bags—available at the Palatine Farmers Market—as a green alternative to plastic. The studio makes reusable laundry bags for the POC Clothing Closet, supporting both environmental and community-focused efforts.
In short, sustainability means making intentional decisions today that help our families and our community thrive tomorrow.
