This Month In The Garden

Let's celebrate the Garlic Harvest and get ready to plant for next season

As bulbs are harvested and stored to dry and cure, we are using the newfound bed space to plant fall succession crops.

We are excited to share our new video on Growing Garlic in Vermont. It was funded by a Climate Resilience Historically Underserved Farmer grant from Sustainable Agriculture Research Education (SARE) and we partnered with VLJP (Vermont Language Justice Project) to produce and translate it into four languages.

Garden-Scale Cover Cropping August 25th

Join us for our next workshop in the Garden Like a Farmer series sponsored by the City of Burlington Conservation Legacy Fund. FREE!

Cover cropping improves soil health by reducing erosion, managing nutrients, and suppressing weeds. However it is also a very nuanced practice, especially at the garden-scale. In this workshop, we will go over selecting cover crop seeds best suited for small-scale gardens, defining a seeding calendar, and coming up with a termination plan for successful cover crop management. Participants will tour our teaching garden site to see examples of various cover crop seed varieties and termination techniques. We’ll discuss benefits and disadvantages of winterkill versus overwintering cover crop and how to adapt management in both a tilled and no-till garden setting.

Sunflowers for Ukraine

VGN is a planting "a little sunshine" for Ukraine. You can register to participate too.

"We planted sunflowers at two program garden sites; one at VGN's Teaching Garden where we are currently practicing seed saving and one at Seedsong Collective Garden where 20 members tend to the garden together. One of the Seedsong members is from Ukraine and she planted the sunflowers on a lovely sunny afternoon "
