FSSA: Breaking Down Barriers
Indiana Provides Access To Good Jobs for Reentrants
UNITE INDY’s Sherry Jackson, Scott Whiting, and Jim Cotterill met last week with Becky Buhner, Catrinka Prestly and Dr. Kory Carey of Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's Division of Mental Health and Addiction. They met to begin to break down the No.1 barrier to getting and keeping a job after incarceration—the lack of affordable and reliable transportation to and from work.
UNITE INDY is committed to working with FSSA and its caring staff to implement reentrant transportation to job sites, because nothing works like a job to change the trajectory of individual reentrants' lives and the families they support.
Scott Whiting said, “It's clear that this partnership promises to be very fruitful for those who need a hand up. Our state is working, not only to reduce recidivism and the high cost of tax-payer funded incarceration, but to provide dependable access to good jobs that pay a a living wage for people who have paid their debt to society."
Right now, UNITE INDY has three new second-chance employer-partners waiting to get started with our transportation program. Real change can happen when Indy unites! If you want to explore the benefits of second chance employment, email Scott.

STOP THE VIOLENCE INDIANAPOLIS:
Nipping Violence In The Bud
UNITE INDY partner Stop the Violence Indianapolis (SVI) brought in two Indiana basketball stars, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson, to lead an event for basketball players from Indianapolis area high schools to discuss teen gun violence here. The event, produced by Anthony Beverly of SVI in conjunction with Hoosiers for Good, encouraged these students to use the influence they possess to change the narrative in their schools and neighborhoods.

Stop The Violence Indianapolis, works as a catalyst for social change, empowering people to take action in the greater Indianapolis area to ensure safety, justice, accountability and healing. SVI was the first organization to partner with UNITE INDY when we opened our doors, and the work Anthony and SVI do is crucial in the battle against violence here.

UNITE INDY V.P.:
Scott Whiting Works With Employers To Provide Jobs & Much More
We talk a lot about how important it is for those leaving incarceration to have a job that pays a living wage.
But without Scott Whiting, who works to find employer-partners willing to provide good jobs to those with criminal records, there would be few opportunities out there for the thousands of those released here every year.
Scott's organizational skills really kick in running UNITE INDY's transportation program, requiring coordination with employers, drivers, and route planning in the use use of our 15-seat passenger vans that carry reentrants to jobs all over Central Indiana.
As an integral part of UNITE INDY, Scott also can be found at our Jobs for Life training programs or organizing another job fair with our employer partners, where hundreds of people with criminal backgrounds show up to find both work and a future. His commitment to providing a second chance is second to none and we are so proud to have him as a member of our team!

MAKING LOANS FAIR FOR ALL:
If Not A High Interest 'Pay Day' Loan,
Then What?
For financially vulnerable Hoosiers who can’t access traditional credit, predatory ‘payday’ financial products with Annual Percentage Rates as high as 391% may seem like their only option. but there is a group of concerned Hoosiers who are working hard to give people an alternative.
Yesterday, UNITE INDY and other partner entities met to hear Andy Nelson, Senior Policy Analyst with the Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute, (pictured) and Teresa Reimschisel, Operations & Programs Director of Prosperity Indiana, explain how Indiana Community Loan Centers can be a real solution to this economic equity problem. These centers are needed to provide loans at fair interest rates that would not doom borrowers to endless payments and bankruptcy. More on this to come!

More Access to Mental Health Services Needed in Indiana
An estimated 175,000 Hoosiers suffer with untreated mental health issues like severe depression, bi-polar disorder and manias that can lead to violence, self-medication and addictions to drugs or alcohol, and even suicide.
While our local penal system has taken the bold and common-sense move to assess potential mental health problems among those entering the Marion County Community Justice Center here, for those outside of the justice system, mental health care opportunities are severely limited, especially in rural areas of Indiana.
Our state is rated #45 in the nation for having low access to mental health care. For those who cannot afford expensive private clinics, there isn’t much out there.
Read Nancy's blog post to see how we got to this state of affairs and the statistics behind the our need to improve.

Why Support UNITE INDY?
Our major focus is to assist the 12,000 inmates returning to Central Indiana after long-term jail sentences. UNITE INDY provides mentored job training inside the jail, and a website for those with a criminal record, SecondChanceIndy.com, filled with job openings offered by our Second Chance employer partners.
These jobs are powerful weapons with which to fight poverty in our neighborhoods.

Support of Ministries and Charities:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY has provided a free web-based system at UNITEINDY.org that connects churches, ministries, and other charities to share their volunteer needs or needed items. UNITE INDY also provides the manpower necessary to assist smaller organizations—that have no one to upload needed items—the help they require to access this service. Through this portal, UNITE INDY has brought hundreds of volunteers and thousands of dollars worth of needed goods into the hands of those who assist the poor.
Serving the Servants:
UNITE INDY comes behind urban pastors and ministry leaders by addressing personal and professional needs with free services for those who work tirelessly in their neighborhoods to care for the needy and bereft.
Remember, almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet even in the aftermath of the COVID shut down, as our economy comes back to life and employment is returning, all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is now 21%, and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.
Please donate to UNITE INDY now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your fully tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community in 2021.
Many, many thanks!
