Growing the Good
Greetings!

Serving one another is at the heart of our community here at Saranam. It is fundamental to our connection with one another and a huge part of our families' success.

April is National Volunteer Month, and the perfect time to celebrate the immense contributions of our amazing volunteers to our mission.

Last year, 572 volunteers donated an astonishing 3,953 hours to Saranam. That is equivalent to two full-time staff members working without a vacation all year! At an estimated value of $29.95 per hour, according to the Independent Sector, this translates into $118,392! This incredible figure means we are able to stretch our resources further and offer more to help our families build a bridge out of homelessness.

What a simple dollar amount does not capture, though, is the influence of what volunteers do at Saranam. Many families point to the confidence that volunteers helped them build, or the impact of a connection with a positive role model, as being a critical part of their success at Saranam.

"One of the greatest lessons I learned was not from the classroom itself, but from the hearts and intentions of the staff and volunteers. They taught me that vulnerability is healing."- Saranam alumni

On top of this, the talents that each volunteer brings enhances every part of our program. Whether it is preparing an apartment that brings tears to a new family's eyes, or fixing an IT problem that makes us more efficient, the true value of volunteers is immeasurable.

Their influence doesn't end with us, either. Inspired by the care they receive, many families remain engaged in community service and become a source of goodwill that builds healthier families and a stronger community.

Mother's Day
Mother's Day is right around the corner!

We invite you to celebrate a mother in your life, and the phenomenal mothers in our program, with an extra special Mother's Day gift in their honor.

What every mother really wants on this special day (except some lovely handprint art) is to know that their kids, and all the children in our community, have the chance they deserve to thrive. That's why all donations you make will go toward helping our mothers build a better life for their kids.

Every mother needs a village and you are an integral part of ours. Thank you for honoring the mothers in your life in such a meaningful way!

RoofAngels
Raise the roof for an extra special community partner!

Our special thanks to RoofCare, who donated time and materials to repair the roof on our warehouse as a part of their RoofAngel project.

For a decade, the RoofAngel project has has provided free roof repair to a selected nonprofit every year. Their goal is to relieve the worry that a damaged roof can bring and allow organizations to dedicate their precious resources to the people they help. We are honored to receive this year's award.

"The Saranam mission is so compelling it was an easy decision to select them as the recipient of RoofCARE's 2021 Roof Angel project. It is a privilege and an honor to contribute in a small way. RoofCARE has a heart for New Mexico and will continue to look for opportunities to support organizations that are making a positive impact in our state."

This building now houses our donated goods, but will become our family and children's programming center when new campus is complete. We are excited that this roof will keep our families safe for many years to come!

Honoring a Cherished Friend
We join with the rest of our community in mourning the passing of one of our most beloved supporters, LaDonna Hopkins.

LaDonna embodied all the best that community is: she worked tirelessly and creatively to make sure families had opportunity, compassionately offered a listening ear, and was quick to lend a helping hand to those in need.

LaDonna worked deeply in many ways throughout Albuquerque’s philanthropic community and was always a champion and advisor for Saranam. She enriched our work and we are so thankful to have known her.
-Tracy Weaver, Saranam Executive Director

She was involved in several organizations in Albuquerque, but had a special connection to Saranam. Her son, Sean Hopkins, was Saranam's Director of Development before passing in 2013. LaDonna continued her son's legacy, and took special joy in the learning about the activities kids at Saranam could participate in with the help of his memorial fund.

Her kindness and warmth will be dearly missed, but her passionate care will continue to inspire people in the community she loved so deeply.

Program Highlight
This month we celebrated Earth Day in a very appropriate way- getting our hands dirty! Gardening is a big part of our curriculum and if you walk through our campus, you can find community gardens in every shared space. Some families grow flowers, while others grow their favorite vegetables, or even a salsa garden.

For us, gardening is much more than simple plant maintenance. Families work together to plan their gardens, diligently care for their plants and share the harvest with friends. It is a chance to slow down and relish the beauty of this magnificent Earth we share.

Community Partnerships

Thank you to two special grantors for their thoughtful support of our work!

Saranam is proud to partner with both the Texas Methodist Foundation and Nordstrom to provide families with the resources they need to end generational poverty and homelessness.

We look forward to working with them throughout the year to serve our families and grow in community.
Easter Bunnies

Big hoppy thanks to Covenant United Methodist Church for their donation of 30 Easter baskets for the kids in our program!

These lovely baskets were filled to the brim with goodies and games specially chosen for each child. The amazing helpers who put these together are the best Easter bunnies we could ask for!
