In New York there are three types of guardianships, read our latest blog Guardianships of the Galaxy and Beyond to find out more.

A guardianship may not only be a useful tool in many situations, but for some it may be the only option. A guardianship is an arrangement where the court appoints a person to make various decisions for another individual. The types of decisions the guardian may make, as well as the extent of the power to make those decisions, depends on the type of guardianship and the abilities of the individual over whom the guardianship is sought (this individual is referred to as the “ward”).
Getting to Know Our Team
Marie Katz is the Business Manager at Katz, Smith & Chwat, P.C. Marie joined Katz, Bernstein & Katz, LLP in 1998 as an Administrator with primary responsibility for Katz Tax Seminars, LLC. Marie took a leave of absence in 2007 to focus on her own business, Makeup by Marie Katz, and raising her daughters. Marie returned to KBK in 2015, and since the formation of KSC she has been an integral part of overseeing the business of the firm. As the firm’s Business Manager, her principal duties focus on the general office management, human resource issues, office system management and bookkeeping.

When not working on the business of KSC, Marie continues to run her own business of 19 years and has now expanded to not only provide makeup services but spray tanning as well. Marie, of course, enjoys spending her non-working time with her daughters, Emmi (16) and Olivia (15) .

Trust and Estate Planning Strategies
Kim M. Smith will discuss Trust and Estate Planning Strategies to provide for you and your family during your lifetime and after your death. Most people spend decades saving for retirement, the education of children or grandchildren and providing for their families. Yet, the same people, so diligent in growing assets and managing their family affairs, often neglect to prepare an estate plan to protect their financial security and well-being during their lifetime and to distribute their estate upon their death. This seminar is at 6:00pm at Lindenhurst Senior High School.

Long Island Activities
During the summer months, Long Island becomes one big beach town with trips to the shore becoming a regular activity for residents and visitors. A day at the beach is absolutely among one of the best things to do, but that's just the beginning. There is no shortage of fun things to do on Long Island in the summer. Here are a few of our favorite activities throughout Nassau and Suffolk County.

Montauk Lighthouse , Montauk State Park – The oldest lighthouse in New York State (authorized by President George Washington in 1792) and a National Historic Landmark, it is understandably one of the most popular destinations (and
Robert Moses State Park, Fire Island picture spots) on Long Island. Paired with
the expansive scenic views of the Atlantic
Ocean, it’s hard to beat. While you’re there, you can climb to the top, walk the park or visit the museum, which is located in the 1860 keepers’ house.

White Post Farms , Melville –Little ones get the opportunity to hand and bottle feed goats, interact with birds in the free flight aviary and encounter more exotic animals like kangaroos and lemurs. Plus, they have a great cafe and farmers market.

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park  in Oyster Bay, guests are free to wander the grounds of the Gold Coast estate and its formal gardens and greenhouses.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration allows visitors to step back in time. This “living history museum” consists of 36 houses, barns and buildings dating from 1765 through 1865, in which you’ll find costumed interpreters that deliver facts and stories about the people who occupied them. And on weekends in the summer, you can catch an old timey baseball game.

And it just wouldn’t be summer on Long Island without a stop at Freeport’s Nautical Mile , a literal mile’s worth of bars, beachy little gift shops & waterside restaurants.

With a beautiful place like Long Island, full of history and entertainment, there are endless opportunities. Be sure to check out something new this summer!
